  • Resaca Editorial

The Rome (Ga.) News-Tribune is very pro-preservation and frequently runs editorials on the subject. This one is in the 01/12/07 edition:

    Resaca ... now is time

Still, let’s face it: A state that doesn’t take pride in preserving the past certainly will never be inclined to deal with the present either.

In doing that, we remove the fact that living historical actors at that time…didn’t yet know what was going to happen. We cannot understand the decisions they made unless we understand how they perceived the world they were living in and the choices they were facing.”[/I]-Christopher Browning

Very nice statement I think, and very true.

      Marlin,
Thanks for drawing our attention to this R N-T statement. Now all the Georgians on here need to make sure the legislature has seen it.

This is the best news we've heard in a long time. 2007 may be the year (finally) that the Resaca Battlefield site gets the funding it needs to go forward.

              From the Calhoun Times:

Perdue pushes funding for Resaca battle site

              01/12/07
              John Willis

Gov. Sonny Perdue plans to invest $5 million to develop the Resaca Battlefield as a national tourist destination.

Perdue, speaking Wednesday in his state of the state address, said Georgia’s Civil War memorials, museums, battlefields and cemeteries are among its most treasured historical sites.

“2011 will mark the 150th anniversary of the conflict, and we all know that few states were as impacted by the Civil War as Georgia,” Perdue said.

He said the anniversary will provide a rare opportunity to increase heritage tourism in Georgia.

Heritage tourists “spend an average of 30 percent more per trip than average travelers, and we want them to come to Georgia,” the governor said. “So in order to prepare for the upcoming milestone, I am recommending that we invest $5 million to develop Resaca Battlefield, and to revitalize and restore our historic Civil War sites.”

Beth Grubbs, director of the Gordon County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said it would be hard to estimate the economic impact that Perdue’s plan would have.

“In 2005, tourism meant $22 million in Gordon County, and that was without an active Civil War site,” Grubbs said. “Civil War sites are so important for tourism, and I could easily see a 30 percent increase in tourism dollars if the Resaca Battlefield is developed.”

Grubbs said she envisions a museum at the Resaca exit that could also serve as a gateway to all of the county’s tourist opportunities.

“The state has purchased about 300 acres on the east side of I-75, and I would love to see a museum and welcome center that we could use for the entire county,” she said. “We would get those folks when they get off the Resaca exit and get them to stay a few days to take advantage of all that we have to offer.”

“It’s amazing to me how popular the American Civil War is with tourists from England and Europe, so there will be a lot of international travel happening here,” she said.

In addition to the state’s planned development of the Resaca Battlefield, Grubbs said the county’s plan to develop Fort Wayne, the Civil War earthworks near the battlefield will increase the heritage tourism opportunities here.

The Fort Wayne earthworks are on a small hill overlooking Ga. 136 in Resaca. Gordon County has hired a consulting firm to develop a master plan for the site that will enhance historical awareness of the site and increase tourism.

The governor’s plan also calls for working with neighboring states to develop a comprehensive tourism plan and revitalize and restore historic sites.

                  Re: Resaca Editorial

                  Hi Bobby,

I doubt the Chitwoods ever part with their land. It's been in their family for many generations. If anyone is travelling on I-75, there is a Flying J truckstop at the Resaca exit. I believe the battlefield property starts just after you pass under I-75 and is on the left of the interstate if going North and right if travelling South.

It would be interesting to know some visitor statistics. Most battlefields are off the main interstates. But, Resaca, New Market, etc...are located on an exit of a major highway.
It would be interesting to know, if the general public are more inclined to visit these due to location.

                    Re: Resaca Editorial

This is very good news, My parents live in Calhoun (and I own a small piece of property there) so this is only a few miles from them. Resaca has been trying to maintain its history for some time and is even trying to save their very dilapidated town hall. I think that this addition will make histric tourism even better for the area. I can see a fantastic tour of Georgia being offered based on the Civil War:

                    Andersonville
                    Savannah
                    Cyclorama
Kennesaw (including the Southern Museum of the Civil War and Locomotive History)
                    Now Resaca
                    Tunnel Hill
                    Rome
                    Chikamauga

Hopefully someone may do something at Ringold as well.

I'll see everyone at Resaca in a few months.

                          Let's don't forget:
Ringgold Gap has seen some efforts by Catoosa County over the past few years.
Red House Ford (well, maybe this on's a little easier to forget...)

                          Mr Davis,
Those sites around Dalton have great potential, but need some serious help.

Add to those lists Newnan, the "hospital city of the Confederacy." Oak Hill Cemetery in the historic downtown district includes the graves of 274 Confederates who died in the town's hospitals. Every state in the Confederacy is represented in these burials. About three miles south of town is the Brown's Mill battlefield, site of Joe Wheeler's thorough July 30 victory over Edward M. McCook's raiding column during the lead-up to the siege of Atlanta.
