Re: Possible Gravesites found in Knoxville
Being from Knoxville, I find this very intersting. It will be interesting to see how the city handles the site. The site is in an area that is an african-american community. Knoxville College is a black college. In my opinion, Knoxville has always tried to play down any confederate connection. I believe this is largely due to the politics and conflicts following the war. Parson Brownlow played a large part in this.
Another interesting note is the privately held confederate cemetary, many Knoxvillians do not know it even exsists. It is also surrounded by the african-american community. I feel the city planned much of the government homes around these sites.
I am sure if historians looked at the areas with other government homes they may find other sites that have been lost or "buried". Just my observations.
I will post any follow-up info. I love this history.
Here are some names of other great Georgia Sons buried in Knoxville
Bethel Cemetery, Knoxville, Tennessee (GPS 355413N 835617W)
The Mabry-Hazen House Museum, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is owned and operated by the Hazen Historical Museum Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to educate the public about the life and times of the Mabry and Hazen families and their roles in the history of Knoxville and East Tennessee.
The historic home, which is located on five acres atop Mabry Hill, includes the 4-acre Civil War "Bethel Cemetery," which contains the remains of approximately 1,670 Civil War soldiers, including Confederate soldiers from every southern state, 50 Union prisoners, and 50 unidentified Confederate soldiers.

Plaque finds resting site: Camp Van Dron Knoxville
Just posting a follow-up on the Camp Van Dorn Site in Knoxville.
This article is from the Knoxville News Sentinel today.
"After two decades, historical marker honors soldiers
By FRED BROWN, brownf@knews.com
March 29, 2007
After two decades of research and travel to Knoxville, Gary Goodson Sr., a descendant of one of the Confederate soldiers posted to the city in 1862, dedicated a state historical marker to the soldiers on the 145th anniversary of their arrival.
In 1862, units of the Georgia 40th, 41st, 42nd, 43rd and 52nd infantry regiments rode by train to Knoxville and then marched "two miles west to Camp Van Dorn."
On March 28 of that year, the camp - named after Confederate Gen. Earl Van Dorn - began filling up with Georgia infantry. Among those arriving was Goodson's great-great grandfather, Marion "Mike" Goodson, regimental drummer of the 40th Georgia Infantry Regiment.
Those troops, coming up from Camp McDonald at Big Shanty near Atlanta, were presumably being trained for action in Cumberland Gap.
The Historical Commission marker is near the corner of Western Avenue and News Sentinel Drive in Mechanicsville. The sign has been positioned roughly in the vicinity of where the camp is believed to have been established. Goodson hastens to point out that the camp was in a "natural bowl" and spread out along a creek.
During the encampment, many of the soldiers died of dysentery, measles and mumps, some of which can be attributed to the creek water.
In his quest to find the camp, Goodson - an author, historian and professor of health sciences - founded the Gen. Barton & Stovall History/Heritage Association. The association has been instrumental in helping Goodson with the project. He serves now as the association's historian emeritus.
He said Atlanta Realtor Thomas W. "Chip" Baron, Ed Combs of Forest Park, Ga., Paige Goodson, Goodson's daughter, and Goodson sponsored this trip to Knoxville to defray expenses of the historical marker.
In addition, he received donations from the Sons of Confederate Veterans Chapter 1397 of Dallas-Acworth, Ga., half of whom had ancestors at the Knoxville camp, Goodson said. "

Chris, thanks for posting this. I had forgotten that those regiments were posted in eastern Tennessee before most were transfered to the Vicksburg area. I am sure Robby Mitchell will be interested as well.Herb Coats
