  • NYS Ethnic Regt. Flags

    Greetings All!

I don't know if anyone posted anything in regards to this yet, so here is a go.

This year's flag exhibit at the NYS Capitol Building in Albany highlights ethnic NY regiment battle flags. These include mainly German and Irish colors as well as Colored Troops from NY. The regiments included are:

79th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry – national color
69th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry – flank marker
15th Independent Battery, New York Volunteers – guidon
37th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry – regimental color
58th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry – flank marker
52nd Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry – regimental color
55th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry – flank marker
39th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry – flank marker
26th Regiment United States Colored Troops – national color
20th Regiment United States Colored Troops – camp color

The exhibit is of particular interest to myself, because the flag of the 52nd NY is on display.
On October 30, 1861, May Matthews, representing the “ladies of Brooklyn,” presented this custom made regimental color to the 52nd Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry in a public ceremony overlooking New York’s harbor. Colonel Paul Frank received the flag and delivered a rousing acceptance speech, in German, to his regiment and the sympathetic crowd. The flag, as originally constructed, included three fabric layers- two outer silk pieces, each made from a single piece of silk, supported by a cotton lining. One outer silk piece, seen here, features Liberty atop an eagle with the Constitution in one hand and a national flag in the other, all embroidered, with embroidered battle honors and oak leaves. The other outer silk layer includes embroidered battle honors, an oak wreath, and inscriptions including Colonel Frank's name, regiment identification, and nickname, "Sigels Rifles."

      Justin,

The 52nd was nicknamed the German Rangers and/or Sigels Rifles.

The 54th New York was actually the Schwarzen Jaeger. Easy to be confused with these German units and nicknames though. There is alot of info about the 54th on the NYS website, and it may be helpful.

        Thanks Matt,

I knew it didnt translate (thanks to years of German in HS and College). Just remembered the 50 and thought they may have had more than one nickname. Now that you say it, it was the 54th I was thinking of.
