  • Another Historic Tree Lost

Last week due to concerns about safety, an 1859 magnolia which had been struck by lightning in the summer of 2006 was cut down while bluff stabilization work continues at Grant's Headquarters at City Point unit of Petersburg National Battlefield. The tree was noted in the diary of Richard Eppes as having been planted during the spring of 1859 and named for his eldest daughter, Josephine.

It is hoped that we will be able to replant a magnolia in that spot at a later time from a spawn of the magnolia which had to be cut down.

While this tree may not mean much to forum members, it meant a lot to those of us who work at Petersburg National Battlefield.
    Sincerely,
    Emmanuel Dabney
