Trip to Washington may bring money to Henry
    By Jaya Franklin

County Commission Chairman Jason Harper was in Washington, D.C., early this week, seeking a total of $2.2 million for improvements around Henry County.

“I lobbied for several Henry County projects,” Harper said Tuesday after his return from the three-day trip. “I think that this is going to [turn out to] be a productive trip, financially,” he said.

Harper met with U.S. Reps. Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., and David Scott, D-Ga., Sen. Johnny Isakson, and members of Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ staff.

Harper is seeking funding to complete the Veterans Wall of Honor, improve the Nash Farm Battlefield park, and provide a facelift to Bruton Smith Parkway. The chairman is hoping to change the look of the Ga. Highway 20 corridor named for Atlanta Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith — which leads from Interstate 75 in McDonough to the track in Hampton — to give it more of a race theme.

“We are pleased that Chairman Harper is committed to recognizing Atlanta Motor Speedway through a racing theme for the Georgia [Highway] 20 Bruton Smith Parkway development,” said AMS President Ed Clark. “It will be a great way to welcome fans during racing events as well as creating a unique theme for area residents to enjoy daily,” he said.

Westmoreland said in a statement he backs the proposal.

“Anything we do to improve access around Atlanta Motor Speedway benefits the entire region because that venue has produced $2.3 billion in revenue for the state of Georgia in the past five years,” said Westmoreland.

Harper is also seeking money for the Veterans Wall of Honor.

“[The money will be used to] finish the wall and landscaping,” said Harper. “I’m feeling confident that, the [wall] may be one of the one’s that we actually obtain,” he said.

Construction on the wall, which has begun, is being done through donations to the wall’s fundraising committee.

Henry County officials condemned the Nash Farm Battlefield in 2005 for park land and have been working to turn a home on the 204-acre Civil War site into a museum.

Harper was also seeking money to pump into the county’s judicial system.

“Chairman Harper has done a great job of narrowing the county’s requests to specific projects that will improve the Henry County government’s ability to serve the people and improve the quality of life,” Westmoreland said in a statement.
