District officials are looking for ideas that could help preserve a Capitol Hill landmark.

The Old Naval Hospital on Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast, has been underused for decades, so the D.C. Office of Property Management is accepting proposals for its restoration, renovation and reuse.

The 143-year-old building was originally built to serve Naval and Marine Corps personnel during the Civil War. It was used a a Naval Hospital until 1911, but has been virtually vacant in recent years.

City officials say the goal is to come up with a plan that emphasizes the historic aspects of the property and promotes its use as a community resource for residents of Capitol Hill. Officials hope to provide a long-term lease to an applicant after reviewing proposals submitted by March 12th and making a recommendation on its use.

Re: District Seeks Proposals for Naval Hospital Preservation

    Good Evening All
Within my course of study we have learned continually that rehabilitation is the cornerstone for preserving (well without much fight) much of our historical fabric. However sensible this sounds to me and my peers in theory, I rarely see it employed. In a society where we are constantly inventing and reinventing smaller, fast, sleeker, and smarter toys that can do everything but brush our teeth we still have a nagging problem with wanting to just tear things down. Somehow, somewhere it has been instilled in our minds that a dusty old place would look better in a dumpster then with some love and fresh paint. (Not to mention the occasional overhaul) However even with Tax incentives, state, local and federal it’s not taking on as quickly as would prefer to see. So with that rant I shall provide a plethora of websites for your pleasures. Thanks for the post Paul it was very interesting and as always I shall find someone to write into and would encourage the same.
