  • Auction for Preservation: SC Housewife

    Hi all -
Normally we don't allow auctions on this site but we're going to make an exception. Kathy Bradford of Preservation Parcels has put together a beautiful housewife based off an original and she wants to put this up for auction to benefit the McRae Papers Preservation.

Normally housewifes like these sell for over $100 and she is posting it here with No Reserve! So let the bidding commence and good luck!

Just place your bid right here in a reply for all to see.

*** When no bids have been placed for 24 hours, we'll close the auction!

An important project like the McRae Papers deserves a tremendous amount of support. An original SC housewife has been replicated and is being auctioned to raise funds to help with their purchase. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the SCRR through ACPP.

Just like the original, this one is entirely hand made out of red, white, and blue wool and sewn with silk thread. It is in the non-faded condition and colors that the original would have been when new. The original has the initials “JJ” embroidered. Once someone claims this, I’ll either embroider those initials or the initials of his choice in silk.

The four panels are made out of wool, and the bottom two are pockets. It is stocked with
    • Patches of fabric by FHW, Childs, and more
    • Antique brass pins
    • Needles
    • Thread wrapped on canvas
    FHW logwood
    FHW linen
Black, brown, and cream heavy glace cotton
    • Buttons from Military Warehouse and Jim Kindred -1/2" and 5/8" bone and jappaned civilian buttons. Also, paper-backed tin, and glass buttons in a handsewn linen poke sack
    • Chunk of raw beeswax wrapped in linen
    • Hanks of hemp twine in two thicknesses
    • Cotton twill tape in black and white
    • Tin of strike-anywhere matches in two sizes
    • Handsewn pillow ticking poke sack to hold and protect it all
When unrolled flat, it is 13” long, and 5 ¼” wide. The exterior is brown wool, edged with faded yellow cotton twill tape. The top section has a crescent moon (S.C. symbol since the Revolution), and the second white wool panel has wool layers with needles and antique brass pins. The middle red panel has a white wool on blue wool star, and the bottom blue panel has a Palmetto tree flanked by “S” and “C”. All the pieces are individually cut and sewn in place in layers.

Sorry to interrupt the bidding but I just wanted to say that Ms. Bradford did a superb job modeling the South Carolina housewife. No need to fear it not being authentic, though I'm sure none of us ever do! :p Ms. Bradford, I'll need to get with you on my forgotten housewife, ha!

        Again, sorry!

Re: Auction for Preservation: SC Housewife

Jim Kindred of Military Warehouse is donating seven different types of his beautiful buttons to add to this. He's well respected for his excelllent attention to detail, and I'm very excited to add them to this collection.

The wool for the outside cover came from Pat Landrum. This is becoming a real group effort.

I'll also add some reproduction Confederate stamps, a piece of leather for pushing needles, and a surprise or two.

Thank you to all who have so generously bid. The opportunity to keep the McRae Papers together and accessible is a real gift to us and to our children.

                              Gentlemen,

Do not fear that the housewife shall become too full with all this richness in content--the thing is near to magical in its capacity to hold well considered and necessary items. Little pockets seem bottomless, yet the whole arrangment will roll to carry in your hand.

Then there is the added attraction of seeing jaws drop and then unadulterated envy all around when you bring one of these out. Fine embrodiery on silk is a rare thing to the modern eye, but even the untrained eye will recognize it as something fine.

Rather like Tom Sawyer's fence, folks will be volunteering to sew your buttons on for you, just to touch that housewife.
