Alabama Flag Returns Home

On the front page of the Omaha World Herald is a photograph of a First National Confederate flag carried by the the 1st Regiment, 12th Volunteers that was captured near New Madrid, MO. (Complete story at http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pag...&u_sid=2341841)

During the CW Centennial the Nebraska State Historical had returned the various Southern flags that were held in their archives. Many of these had been on display during the 1950's in the state capital. Apparently this is one that was mislabeled or simply overlooked.

This is an interesting article, thanks for the post. Do you know if the Alabama Department of Archives and History has a Battle-Flag exibit currently on display, or is this planned for the future, or not at all? Here in NY our state's battle-flags are currently being conserved and several at a time are on disply at the New York State Military Museum and Veterans' Research Center.

Since I am from Nebraska, I can only offer the information related in the article regarding Alabama's flag collection. I would imagine it possible to contact Robert Bradley at the Alabama site to answer that question. The artical mentions 90 other flags currently in AL.

Back in the 1940s and 1950s many of the Confederate flags were on display at the Nebraska Capital. During the CW Centennial, they were all (supposedly) returned to their native states. Interesting that this one remained!

We continue the effort to raise funds for flag conservation in Alabama--in fact, this project has been one of the fund raising beneficiaries of the Battle of Selma reenactment since its inception more than 20 years ago. This year its on the calendar for the weekend of April 15.

Two weeks later, on Saturday April 28, the new museum at Confederate Memorial Park in Marbury, Alabama opens with a speech scheduled by Gov Riley at 10:00 am. Located just north and east of Montgomery, this rural cemetary is the former site of the Old Soldiers Home.

I have not seen the scrips for all the museum cases ( I just know I've got to go dress one of them as soon as I get back from Banks Grand Retreat), but know that the old museum held a number of the original flags before they were shipped off for conservation. I imagine they will be back.

Consider this an invite. Y'all come. :D
