An idea to raise some modest donation funds for the board or the CWPT.

I am a USMC KC-130J pilot over in Iraq, and we frequenstly unfurl and hang US flags on the aircraft during combat support missions for family and friends. For another board (for another hobby) I offered to fly such flags for individuals if they paid for the flag, postage, and an extra $20 or so to donate to that board. A dim bulb in my head flickered and I thought, why not also for preservation? In fact, how more appropriate; a momento from modern US military history to help preserve past US military history.

    The details:

What you would receive is a nice quality US flag (3x5) and a certificate we make here in the squadron that states the date, aircraft flown, and signatures of the crew. I probably can also get a pic of the flag in the aircraft during the mission. I fly aerial refueling missions over the Al Anbar province supporting USMC AV-8B and FA-18D’s, and cargo/logistic flights to Baghdad, Al Taqqaddum, Balad, and a few other locations within the country. I am not going to go so far as offer flags from any specific mission, since they are not predictable.

I do not foresee any ethical conflict in this since this is not for profit and I hope it would raise some money for preservation or the board. The flags cost $20 and priority mail back to the states averages around $10, so $50 is a fair enough price; it provides roughly a $20 donation.

Due to both time commitments and sometimes slow access to commercial internet sites, I cannot always get immediate access to the board from the gov't computers in our spaces. Many times I have to go to the local base internet room and there is always a wait. So I will only be checking the status of this thread every few days.

However, I have 24 hour email access with:

benjamin.grant(at)acemnf-wiraq.usmc.mil ...replace the (at) with @...

If you are interested, please post, but you must email me at the above address and I will give you the specific instructions. The only way I can “get” money from you while I am here in Iraq is via paypal at the moment. What I would request is for you to paypal the total amount to me and then I can have the balance donated to the board.

I am here until August. I don't like to fly more than two or three flags on a flight due to mission considerations and keeping it from being tacky, and I only do it every few flights. This won't be a next day delivery thing. Expect a few weeks turn around at best.

Please advise if you’d like to get one and I will go from there.

    Regards

      Ben,
I have an American flag that a good friend sent to me from Iraq. At the time, he was an Army Apache pilot, and he carried the flag with him on several missions. When I received the flag, I took it to a local elementary school and they flew the flag for a day over the school grounds to honor our men and women who are serving in Iraq. I treasure that flag as a family heirloom. It has seen the elephant.

Just to put in a good word for Ben and the idea. We recently obtained a flag to use as a raffle prize at a golf outing. Ben was great to work with, we rec'd the flag very quickly. Beautiful flag along with a very, very nice certificate. Looking forward to raising funds with it for Johnson's Island next weekend.

Well done Ben, keep up the great work over there!
