Re: Looters Damage Fortifications at Vicksburg NMP

    Thanks Patrick,

I have been monitoring this topic on the couple relic hunting forums too and it is a black eye on the relic hunting and collecting community as a whole.

My advice for all collectors, whether it be for non-dug or dug relics is that you keep your reciepts, even though you may have bought without your wife's permission, keep your reciepts. It maybe the only thing that keeps you out of trouble, both financially or legally.

What's really sad about the Vicksburg ordeal, is that knowing where this occured, I would bet that over 45% of the holes yealding nothing more than pop-tabs and junk.

    Bad situation.

Red flags in photos mark the locations of holes. The white tarp in the second photo is covering a massive hole the size of a small vehicle. Also, the reward has been increased significantly.

Remains Found Along Railroad Redoubt Identified

By Patricia Montague, Supervisory Park Ranger
        August 28, 2007

On the afternoon of May 13th, park staff were working along the historic Railroad Redoubt, investigating a recent ARPA case, when they came upon the skeletal remains of an adult with an obvious head injury in what appeared to be a shallow grave. A joint investigation was conducted by the park, local law enforcement agencies and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. The remains have been confirmed as those of James Morgan of Vicksburg. According to Morgan’s family, he had a tendency to wander off. Twelve years ago, he disappeared and never returned. Morgan was 90 at the time he vanished. A good way to deter relic hunting on park property is to litter the place with metal washers. They will eventually get tired of digging them up
