National Park Service News Release:
VICKSBURG, MS — During the week of May 6, 2007, vandals looted the fortification and cultural landscape at the Texas monument located along the historic Railroad Redoubt.
The Texas monument, dedicated in 1961, maintains one of nine fortifications in the area used in the defense of Vicksburg, and was the only fortification penetrated by Union forces. The Railroad redoubt, on the list of Classified Structures, is also designated as a site of National Significance. Archeologists at the Southeastern Archeological Center (SEAC), located in Tallahassee, Florida, assisted staff with the damage assessment, estimated at 10’s of thousands of dollars, and crime scene management.
Violations for this offense fall under the Archeological Resource Protection Act of 1979. A reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the violators is being offered through Crime Stoppers and private donation totaling $10,000.00.
