Fellow Living Historians:
The Gettysburg Foundation is asking for your help!
As you may know, the Gettysburg Foundation is working in partnership
with the National Park Service at Gettysburg on the Campaign to
Preserve Gettysburg. This project includes construction of a new
Museum and Visitor Center, conservation of the Cyclorama painting,
restoration and protection of numerous Park artifacts, and
battlefield rehabilitation.
We are moving forward on all fronts and especially with the
Cyclorama conservation which includes preservation and remounting of
the canvas, creating a canopy, and recreating the diorama. Upon its
completion, the viewer will lose sense of where the painting begins
and ends exactly how a 19th century observer would see it. We liken
this experience as the IMAX of the late 1800s as people look at the
painting almost as if they are in the midst of Pickett's Charge
behind the Federal line. In fact, when the veterans visited the
Gettysburg Cycloramas, they felt it was so life-like that some of
them wept.
There were a few Cyclorama painted and created to depict the
fighting at Gettysburg. The Gettysburg National Military Park owns
the painting displayed in Boston and Foundation is working to
conserve the Cyclorama how it was displayed in Boston and later
Philadelphia.
We have people working on this conservation but need your assistance
in a short amount of time. A call was put forth for reenactors to
fill the diorama with some of their gear to produce a landscape
littered with battle debris. I know this is hard, but we are
looking at a 2 to 3 week deadline. If we do not have the gear by
that point, we will go back to some consultants and they will buy or
acquire other goods.
This honestly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to impact
Gettysburg in a positive way as the Cyclorama has not been viewed
with all of its components since 1891. Please consider giving one
or more of the pieces of your equipment below and impact Gettysburg
in a powerful way. We are looking for quality items.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at hmyers@gettysburgfoundation.org with any questions.
On behalf of the Gettysburg Foundation, I thank you for your
consideration.
Many Thanks,
Heidi Myers
