  • Fort Gaines, Alabama Photos

I haven't been to Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island, Mobile, Alabama since January of 2004. I was wondering how it looked currently since Hurricane Katrina, so today I took a field trip to the island. The weather was 102 degrees and slightly warmer than the last time I was there. Hopefully there will be additional preservation funds to help restore this amazing fort. There was a good steady stream of visitors while I was there.
The rest of Dauphin Island is coming back to life.

    Greg,

The wheels grind on this sort of thing with agonizing slowness. When we were down there at Christmas (Hank Trent, Mr. and Mrs Morgan, and I), Joe told us that only recently had the initial bid specs been issued and funding guaranteed for repairs for damage from Hurricane IVAN.

Still and all, even crumbling brick provides shelter, and the laundress, the cook, the hired laborer and the slave of sorts spent a cozy Christmas within its walls.

Some of us will return for an 18th century adventure there in mid-fall.

Yassir, I used to be Mrs. Lawson. I still run period dyepots, knit stuff, and cause trouble.
