Here in the last few months we have had at least 3 plaques stolen off of some our Indiana monuments, if anyone sees or hears anything, please let us know.

Folks, Just in case anyone hears anything, the plaques are from the 31st Indiana, 42nd Indiana, and 88th Indiana. We have also had in the past the plaques of the 9th Indiana, 10th Indiana, and 36th Indiana Stolen. If anyone notices any of these on ebay at a CW show, etc, please contact us at the Chickamauga Battlefield, 706-866-9241.

Mark,
We dont know why they took them, probably to sale them, we have been covering the local scarp metal shops, but we have decided to try to cover all avenues. It really burns me up.

Theft of copper/brass/bronze items is rampant due to high scrap prices. Here in Illinois we have even had thieves shut down oil wells and steal the brass fittings that were installed for their corrosion resistance. I am surprised that some of the bronze cannons on display in places have not turned up missing by now. Probably just a matter of time. - Bob Herr
Have you been having the GHTI over for living histories again, Lee? You know that's always a bad idea.:D
Seriously though, I will keep a look out for anything up here. I have a connection or two in the scrap business here and will tell them to look out for them.
Kind of suspicious that they are only stealing plaques from Indiana monuments, junkies would go for the easiest, I would assume. We are demobing in Indy, in a little over a week, I will see if I cant look up a few relic/antique shops there and ask some questions. I also have a friend whose family owns a large scrap company in Middle TN, I will email her as well. -ELI GEERY

On September 11, 2007, Park Rangers discovered that the bronze plaques had been stolen from 42nd and 88th Indiana Infantry Regiment monuments, both located along Glenn-Kelly Road in the Chickamauga Battlefield. Each plaque measures 12” x 18." The monuments were placed on the battlefield in 1898 by Indiana veterans to commemorate their participation in the Battle of
Chickamauga in the fall of 1863.
If you have any information about this crime, please contact Supervisory Park Ranger Jim Staub at (706) 866-6627 or via e-mail at Jim_Staub@nps.gov.
Our friends group are now offering a $1,000 reward for info leading to the return of the plaques.
Wow, that $1,000 would be far more useful in preserving monuments then it would be in recovering them. I am very sorry to hear about this incident. It's a sad state of affairs when historical monuments become the subject of vandalism/theft. Let us only hope that whoever the culprit(s) are, they are foolish enough to try and sell them in the open market.
