  • Chickamauga Park Day 2008

On Saturday, April 5, 2008 volunteers are invited to team up with the National Park Service and the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) to help clean and restore areas within the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.

This nationwide CWPT sponsored effort – known as Park Day – is an annual event that allows volunteers to assist with the maintenance of America’s battlefields, cemeteries, and other historic sites.
Park Day projects are planned for three locations: Chickamauga Battlefield; Orchard Knob Reservation; and the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District.
Activities will commence at 9 a.m. at each site with a short educational program, and will conclude at 1 p.m.
Planned projects include building a section of split-rail worm fence, removing trash and debris, cutting invasive non-native plants, washing markers and tablets, installing interpretive tablets, sweeping out historic houses, etc.
Participants should bring work gloves and wear sturdy shoes. Volunteers are asked to sign up for their preferred park site in advance with the Friends of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park via the Friends’ Message Line at (423) 624-6914, or by using the “Contact Us” function on their website at www.chickchatt.org.
Volunteers can also sign up by calling the Friends of Moccasin Bend at (423) 785-3030, or the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center Information Desk at (706) 866-9241.
For more information contact Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Chief of Resource Management Jim Szyjkowski at 423-752-5213x121.

    Re: Chickamauga Park Day 2008

If I were not working on that day, I would certainly join those out in the field to make improvements to the battlefield. Volunteers can have made a difference in our local, state, and national parks.
