I got through to the Perryville City Council - did you?
Re: I got through to the Perryville City Council - did you?
10:24AM opposition recorded
The lady was very nice. I told her I was calling about the zoning issue near the Perryville Battlefield, she said "I imagine you're opposing it." I said I do. She took my information and was very nice. I think our concerns are being felt by at least one person, the poor lady answering the phone. I hope they rotate that duty so she can get a break.

9:49AM Today. Voice Mail Left.
Expressed that I always enjoy visiting Perryville, and that development would definitely disrupt the beauty and hallowed-ness of the field, and that I hope that the people of Perryville would reconsider destroying the gem in their backyard.

I just emailed them at 11:00 am. Told them I have enjoyed the privilege of occupying their Merchant's Row and actually walking the distance to the battlefield from the town. I sure would hate to see those rolling pastures filled with cookie-cutter homes!

The lady on the phone was very nice, very worn out. I told her I bet she was getting a lot of calls, she said so many that she isn't getting her regular work done. She was pleasant - I told her she was quite the saint!:wink_smil Keep them coming!!

I delibertly didnt focus on what to me is a given, the hallowed nature of buckets of American blood that were spilled here...sadly that doesnt carry the weight I feel it should these days...but folks even from a business stance this is just a bad idea, and a quick dollar 'hit' that wont be worth the hangover later!
Dear City Council of Perryville,
It has come to my attention that the city/county of Perryville are reviewing a proposal to developed parcels of land adjoining the Perryville battlefield. First, let me say coming from rural Southwest Virginia I can understand the notion that development in and of its self is always a great idea, this folks is wrong. Development first and foremost is usually an idea brought forth as a purely profit making venture by the developer and landowner, any promised gains to the community are always future based and largely depend on the type of development contemplated. These promises are quiet often found afterward to have been overblown. I read that this proposed development will consist of "highway-commercial, single-family and multi-family housing," Lets consider what that will mean "in real time", What is being considered is what could be termed "strip malls and housing developments" while these types of developments are often touted as bringing in additional wealth to small communities, the larger longer forecast is usually found to be not as rosy. I come from a small town and county in SW Virginia and my area has made this same mistake in recent years. What tends to happen in the long view is that land is gobbled up and quickly 'slash and burn' developed, malls spring up, housing, and assorted 'developement', sometimes within less that 3 years the community is saddled with empty buildings, littered, empty parking lots, housing, especially with the housing bubble long since popped; empty, for sale, and derelict. Not only do the town and counties involved end up with an eyesore to contend with, they end up with what often times turns out to be a costly white elephant that no one wants, since the trend in development tends toward'new developement' of more open spaces, these paved empty or barely occupied areas continue to blight. Please take a moment and compare and contrast this with the long-term view of the resources that you already have now. You have a pristine battlefield, which I understand draws at least a 100,000k visitors a year, think for a moment what the revenue stream will be in coming years if this continues and grows, these tourists wont be visiting in a vacuum, they will spend their monies in the surrounding area as well. Then there are the federal funds and preservation dollars available, possibly; as trends go you could also see incentives for 'green spaces' and open conservation areas. I wouldn't feel off base to say that it is actually just a matter of time before more federal dollars are mandated for these types of programs. Please I can not erge you strongly enough to slow down and rethink what seems on the verge of happening here, not only are you about to make a grave error if you rush to development now, if the article I read was correct in all particulars you may be entering into an agreement where what is 'promised today' will be as usual forgotten tomorrow. Resources are finite, what you waste today, what you misuse today, will never return. The choice is of course yours to make, choose wisely, choose caution, do not move to developed this land, you will most assuredly regret it in the future.

I just hung the phone up from making my call. The lady was very nice.
Just thought I would mention how great it is that the members here are stepping up to the plate no questions asked. No debating whether the land should be saved or not........
