Well, I must say that I am going to miss the smiling beauty of April. Every time I signed in and saw her cheerful grin, I admired the fine image. Two and three spoke most to me, lots of attitude in three, but two gets my vote as the image reminds me most of Mr.and Mrs. Chestnut.:D

Image No. 1, was inspired by an original image of Co. D, 93d New York Infantry:

A friend of mine submitted a group photo that included me (No. 3), which was hugely flattering to me since he obviously didn't think I brought down the quality of the picture that much :p. However - and I hope he dosen't kill me or never talk to me again! - I gotta admit I had to vote for No. 2 - gotta be one of the BEST modern images I've ever seen; Ian's fiancee's hairstyle is amazing for the period they are portraying (about which I otherwise admit I know little), and the whole thing to my eyes looks about flawless.

It has the added bonus that my substantial frame ain't in it...:wink_smil

        Good job!

The circa 1849 photo of Chandra and I was taken on the occasion of our first year together as a couple at the Columbia Diggins' event, where we first met. William Dunniway was the photographer.

Our inspiration for the image was taken from numerous images of late 1840s couples. We wanted a pose that was a little more "intimate" than usual. All of the clothing that we are wearing is documented specifically to the year 1849 (too bad the diamond pattern of the white cotton Marseilles vest didn't show up). Here are some examples of Daguerreotypes taken during the same period from various ebay auctions:

            Thank you.:)

Her hairstyle is pretty typical for that time period, some poof out even farther to the sides. It took most of the morning getting her hair just right. My hair proved problematic, I just couldn't get it to "flip" out at the sides quite the way you see in the images, so I put on my top hat (after considerable amounts of pomade had been applied) and walked around town for a couple hours. When I removed my hat bingo, just the look I wanted flips, curls and all!

Tom.....youre banished from the Brizzay brotherhood for treason. However I hoped #2 would be one of the finalists also.

#2 is just spectacular. It got my vote. I know, you want to know why. Well, for the same reason I like early banjo music. I just do.

Ian, your modern image next to the originals shows how hard you two worked to get it right. Strong work.

Absolutely #2. Greatest civilian image I've ever seen.
Number one would have gotten my vote, but that little guy in the middle ruined it, and I'm sick of hardee hats.

Well, it's certainly exciting to be a finalist for a competition! Don't think I've been in this position since I ran for class president in junior high, and I happened to lose by 1 vote. Guess who I didn't vote for??

Likewise, I'm not doing the same here either. I thought No. 2 was the best, namely because of the existing similarities with portraits of couples, as Mr. McWherter exemplified. I also own a similar ambrotype (see attachment).

Our own image was not based on a particular photograph. We decided to leave out our weapons and accouterments for the more '59 civy-look (aside from Randy's Virginia Inf'yman frock). The variations in our own individual dress is more or less reflective of the types of clothing worn during the Antebellum period. Though I've only read about civilian-militia clothing (never seen a photo), there are an ample number of paintings and photographs depicting civilians of the day.

And for the record, I have to give kudos to the 'plate submitted by Doug Cooper. It reminded me a lot of the attached image (though, I can't recall if he had a Remington revolver like this gent!).

                          Thanks for your votes!

I have to remark that this is one of the best and most specific discussions that we have had regarding submitted images. It is great to see the originals that inspired the reproductions and it is great to see a discussion of original hairstyles, specific time-frame references, etc. Thanks to all who are providing the background info. This is what we intended for this monthly cover discussion. (Are you watching Garrison?)
