Greetings Everyone:

It is time to vote for the August Cover of the Authentic Campaigner. Please vote for the image that you feel is the most authentic. This month, because of a tie for third, we have four images. If your image is one of the final four, we require that you provide some background information about the inspiration or impression for the image in this thread.

We encourage conversation about the impressions portrayed as well as any documentation that might be available that would add to the discussion. The intent of the selection process is to determine why you think one image is superior to another.

Image four was our attempt to copy (and pay respect to) an image of some Connecticut artillery officers. The image was done in April '08 by William Dunniway. From left to right-Ernie Manzo, Dave Rogers and Tim Petersen.

No. 2

Greg's away at a LH, but I'll tell what I know. In having his portrait taken at the CVG "At High Tide" event, he wanted to emphasize the nature of the numerous examples of existing personal photographs. And here's why he deserves to win this month:

1. Greg is pictured without any accoutrements other than his Springfield rifle. We've all seen heavily-armed portraits, but compared to how many not? I think the ratio is largely in favour of the later (just look at photographs being sold on eBay). My examples will clearly display only bits of pieces of military garb, here and there (e.g. a hat, sword, military jacket, etc.), on the sitter.

2. He is also wearing my trimmed jacket! This item I had specifically made to cater to the 1863 year, and it is documented. http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/...ad.php?t=18559

3. I'm also moderately biased to friends, I'll admit it! :wink_smil BUT...

I hope everyone will keep in mind my first point (which Greg exemplifies). Yeah, we like seeing those cool monthly covers of people pimped-out in all their equipmentage and with a large number of friends, but is this always period-correct? Not for images being sent home to close contacts, I should believe... The anacromyn KISS really applies to what I've seen photographed during the war.

I voted for #2 because I look in his eyes. IMO, he pulls off the tired, veteran look really well.

Image summary for #1

After hard campaigning, a group of recently captured Confederates are photographed after being captured at New Hope Church, Georgia.

The inspiration for this images comes from the lack of posed, studio images of mid to late war Confederates. Rather, the images we do see of the common Confederate soldier from around mid-war to the end comes in the form of POW and KIA images. So, rather than posing for a photographer during an 1864 event/impression, the image we see of these mid/late war Confederates comes in the way of POWs with a Union private standing guard over them. Further, surviving examples of Confederate POW camps and groups of soldiers in a non-posing, natural and relaxed state was very important for this image. No posing, no hands in the jacket, no gear except for the occational haversack, canteen or knapsack is seen on these prisoners. The war is over for this group of Johnnies, and they don't give a damn for some Yankee photographer.

I don't normally respond to these but No. 1 is an awesome image. I appreciate the informality of the prisoners who are penned up against the rail fence knowing their fight is over- IMHO, we don't see enough rail fences in our repro images. Also, the variety of uniforms and especially hats on the prisoners. Johnny looks like a tired and hard fought fed who is dying in the early summer Ga. heat-- exactly how he felt!

Nic, I hope I didn't bounce you boys around too much on the way the parking lot on Sunday!

Image 1 is amazing! It really looks very similar to the POW pictures that I've seen in some of my books. It reminds me (different theater) of the Johnny prisoners pictures taken during Grant's Overland Campaign.

Wendell Decker once again shows that he has an uncanny eye when it comes to wetplates.

A great photo to be sure. Were there any more taken of this group? Congrats to everyone in the photo for getting it right. Johnny looks as happy to have guard duty as much as the rebs look happy to be out of the war ;)
