  • Vote For the September Cover

    Greetings Everyone:

It is time to vote for the September Cover of the Authentic Campaigner. Please vote for the image that you feel is the most authentic. This month, because of a tie for third, we once again have four images. If your image is one of the final four, we require that you provide some background information about the inspiration or impression for the image in this thread.

We encourage conversation about the impressions portrayed as well as any documentation that might be available that would add to the discussion. The intent of the selection process is to determine why you think one image is superior to another.

Image #3 - Click here to view.
Image #4 - Click here to view.

Thanks to everyone who submitted. Good luck to the finalists.

Wow! Those are some hard choices! I liked #3 the most, but it dosen't look much "campaigner-ish", but a great shot. Its a hard call between #1 and #4 after that.

              Hello,
Our inspiration for this image comes from a couple of ideas. There is something about all the many field images taken, although I enjoy the studio images, the field images tell a great deal about the men and the campaign. Our other inspiration is the setting, we are serving as 123rd Indiana Co. A Volunteer infantry regiment in November 64' at Franklin. We set up right in front of Carnton in Franklin for preservation. There is something about being on that plantation that draws inspiration for me.

Again in the image is Jon Harris, Kaelin Vernon, Cliff Kelley and the image is taken by Tim Parsons all for preservation!

              Thanks everyone

                #2.

Field image. Taken at the 'Return to ranks' event in Ga a few years ago. The image was taken by Wendell Decker.

Inspiration? Those original images which have a camp site in the background,.

Besides... we don't always have to have an A/C front cover image with a clear distinct personality on display.. do we? ;)

Re: Vote For the September Cover

                  Hi All

Picture #1 was taken by William Dunnaway of David Rodgers, Ian McWherter and Myself of the 1st California Inf Co F at the Moorepark event in CA back in 2006.

The inspiration was from period images of soldiers "hamming it up" for the photographer showing a game being played.

As a father, I also like #3 in sort of a "what are we fighting for" kind of way. My vote, though, goes with #4...has anyone else noticed, though, that the image is backwards (US belt buckle reads SU)? Is that authentic?

                          Hi Mark,

You bet , it is authentic, as with all "Tin Types" it is actually more like a photographig negative. Which makes things look backwards as they are optically reversed when the image is taken

With Ambrotypes, since the picture is taken on a glass plate , it can be used to make paper prints to come out with a positve image on paper or on a CDV.

                          Hope this helps

                            Hi,

I knew that a lot of original photos were backwards, and that there was a reason for it, but I did not know why. Thanks for the information Mr. Smith.

I'm voting for 1 stricktly for the authenticity of the looks on their faces....this is a magnificant photo taken by someone with a FANTASTIC imagination! Bully of an image!!!

I'd like to add that I think this is probably the toughest choice yet....these are all VERY good images!
