Can somebody post said pictures? I am not sure if I have seen them beofre.

I have to disagree slightly with the perfectness of Image #2... I REALLY like the setup and the "distance" the photographer took from the subject. But to me the ground is a glaring reminder of its true 21st century setting... and unless the owner of the photo can clarify for me... it looks like mowed grass. Most camp scenes that I can think of are on dirty, junky scraggly weedy areas, places that are matted down and just plain poopy. I attached some photos real quick to illustrate what I'm talking about.

Sorry to be a pooper, but the ground (for some odd reason) is something that I look at first in setting photos.... I'm open to other thoughts on this though... or if someone knows of an original photo that does have a similar ground-scape as Image #2.

I was wondering the same thing. Using originals for this discussion would certainly add an element that we have been striving for throughout this monthly cover contest.

Real dogfight this month. Good to see.

I also wanted to remind everyone that on October 20th, we will be asking for images that combine your modern military photos and your Civil War impressions, similar to this one. The image can also be a split screen. We are doing this in honer of Veteran's Day in November. You have two months to get it together, so if you are in the modern military, please mark October 20th on your calendar to submit.

I think the ground looks just fine in the picture you speak of. When I was viewing the picture, nothing about it reminded me of the 21st century. In fact, I thought it was the best picture in the contest, so I voted for it.

Unless the cows count as mowers, I'm afraid you are mistaken. The camp was set up in a field left for the cattle to chew. And If I remember correctly, on property that had actually been used by Confederates for the purpose the event portrayed.

Number two looked the most authentic in that alot of scenes of camps seem to have been taken afar. Unfortunately it's hard to determine what is going on in the subject matter. That's one of the reasons I voted for image #4, great image of some hard ass looking Feds. I also dislike the staged and contrived images that you see like the one depicted in image #1.

Re: Vote For the September Cover

Paul brings up a great point. We were only at that event site for 2 days and 2nights so the ground was not as "roughed" up with a lot of foot traffic. I think if we had a more free hand with the land then the setting might have been different. We had only two small companies that weekend. I can only imagine how much the ground would have been chewed up if a battalion, brigade, etc had been there.

On another note, I am in the picture on the blanket next to Brian, who is sitting on a box doing his atypical Brian pose. Can you find us?

The pictures are all great and it was hard to choose one though in the end I chose No. 1 as it does look very period like.

I too, have to say that this months submissions were really tough to choose from. Judging by the results of the polls it looks like it will be very close. I am a fan of all of them, but number 3 is my choice.

Just had to say I voted for #3. I liked the faraway shot: it'd look like something just out of a history book hands down. But pictures of civilians around the war always fascinated me: did this father survive the war? Did this little girl remember much of her father? Very nice pic.

I picked 1, there's just something familiar about the fellows in it...

It is great to have such good photos to choose from. The competition this month seems especially competitive.

It looks to be a close race. I voted for number 4. Anything that reminds me of my children has a special place in my heart. I do believe I have a period photo of the little girl in a book of mine. I will try to post, as per Eric's request...

That would be great. Seeing the originals next to the ones submitted definitely adds depth to the discussion.
