I have no doubt in my mind that #2 will be this October's cover image.

Re: Vote For the October Cover of the AC

#2 was inspired by numerous photos of comrades in arms seen throughout numerous books we had in our dorm room here in Shepherdstown. Its really a prevalent mix of the image of Two Virginians, Reggie T. Wingfield and Hamden T. Fray as seen on pg. 192 of Touched by Fire and the photo of two guys in the 21st Virginia taken in June of 64, as seen in the GI Series "Johnny Reb The Uniform of the Confederate Army, 1861-1865" By Leslie D. Jensen. Though not a complete matchup, we had these two images in our heads plus all the other period images you see with two guys showing true comraderie without the modern day social hangups many living historians perpetuate when getting an image struck.

Oh! And we used the image of the Fincher Brothers of the 43rd Georgia as inspiration. I just got yelled at from Ian for not saying that. Its all good...

Monet at Giverny shouts at me.

I’m drawn to Monet's later work at Giverney primarily for his use of thick paint texture and movement. Here the path automatically draws the viewer’s eyes to the Japanese pond, barely visible beyond the wisteria in the middle ground. He achieves this by shortening his brush strokes; using bold color just above the horizon line; and by creating a subliminal “7” as the path contacts the tree line on the right. He also forces the vanishing point away from center.

An interesting aside to this is his use of reds and umbers in the typically white or lavender wisteria. Thought he seldom applied traditional colors to traditional shapes, Monet's gradual shift to reds, umbers and browns as he aged was mostly likely a sign of acute astigmatism, which alters the perception of color in some sufferers. In this case his affliction is our gain.

My interest in 19th century imagery is based more on the use of true blacks and true whites, light beyond the foreground and
                      layered composition.
