Re: Vote For the October Cover of the AC

I really appreciate the brotherly love going on in #2, they have captured what men in the WBTS lived and looked like in this image for me. I like their posture, the way they hold their hands, down to the detail in their clothing! Excellent work my friends! Bully for You!!

Re: Vote For the October Cover of the AC

On these pages, quite often we see the look of the experienced soldier, with the spit, polish and confidence of grown men, such as shown in #1 and #3--both fine images.

Less common is the look of the "fresh fish"--the brothers/cousins/close friends gone off to war just long enough to be scared, to know that their only friend sits beside them. The physical pose in #2 expresses that friendship in the manner commonly shown in period images--and the expression on the faces tells the deeper story, of war seen, and war to come.

      Number #2, has my vote.

Mrs. Lawson expressed my feelings exactly when I saw image #2. Well Done

Though not a complete matchup, we had these two images in our heads plus all the other period images you see with two guys showing true comraderie without the modern day social hangups many living historians perpetuate when getting an image struck.
Brett, I completely agree with you here. As serious historians, whether you do or don't have an active interest in "all things collodion", I don't think it's too hardcore or unauthentic to recreate common poses and gestures (or even uncommon [see wacky Henry Barker-pose attachment]) found in many dags, ambros, and tins. How simpler personal photographs were back then!

I think it's a reenactorism for us to just show up for a photographer, plop-down on some chair, and expect him/her to pose us in a fashion that could be "period". Why not go the extra step? Bring along a documented pose and recreate it! I think such implementation:

          1. Helps you and the photographer out .
          2. Is 100% authentic.
          3. Kills the likelihood of it being a cool image, just because you think the poses/setting/miscellaneous items (i.e. guns, knives, equipment) make it such.

Also, it's just a great image of you two. Though, ACers won't be privy to how darn grumpy/humorous you two get coming from the back of the column at 7 o'clock am! :wink_smil

For all of the reasons given for choosing image #2, I think they best apply to the same things achieved in a much more subtle manner in image # 3. Both are really good guys, nice job.

Brett and Ian have my vote, all the way.

You guys are priceless. Both in the image and in person.

Image 2 has my vote. To me it symbolizes a time, that is sadly gone, when a man could outwardly show the love and true friendship of a close pard.

                    Editors and Readers,

My congratulations to all those who submitted. While I admit that #2 will no doubt grace the cover and is very good, I picked image #1. Though not the choice running out in front, it is an interesting image. Each man holds his sword differently. The backround of logs, barrels, coat, ghostly bottles, dirt foreground all contrasts with their faces and expressions, and makes me stare at them. It also reminds me of the casual debris seen in period pictures taken out doors. Each image is very good. Thank you.

Re: Vote For the October Cover of the AC

                      Hallo!

All three are nice images, IMHO.

I was torn between Nos. 2 and 3.

I believe No. 3 is the superior image, but No. 2 has an emotional "evocative" story behind the "sitting" that gives it temporal and mood "resonance."

I rarely get involved in the cover voting, or if I do, I vote without comment.

The reason being, in my heresies, many of the images selected appear to be selected not based upon what could be a "Period Image," in terms of lighting, exposure, focus, depth of field, composition, setting. proprs, etc.,- but rather what often appears to be high "quality" reenactors/living historians "sitting" for an image done with CW period photography.
As a result, much like some of the differences between say a Troiani and a Kunstler art print- the popular cover images often appear to modern folks simulating a Period image and not modern folks emulating what could be set next to original images and not be taken for anything different.

While that is not everyone's standards or criteria for likes and dislikes, or voting in the selection (nor does it have to be), it is how I personally look at the submissions- and usually always do not have mine "winning" (not that they have to win).
So I tend to stay away...

All of the covers are great, and the submissions interesting.

Others' mileage, likes and dislikes, will vary...

Re: Vote For the October Cover of the AC

Congratulations to Ian Broadhead for his image submittal this month. It was a runaway vote and the image will certainly make a welcome addition to the front page of the site. As always, thanks to all who submitted this month.

A reminder to everyone that next month, on October 20th, we will be accepting images to honor the modern military for Veteran's Day in November. You can submit an image that mixes your Civil War impression with your modern military uniform. Jake Nott submitted an image a couple of months ago that inspired the idea for the Verteran's Day cover. It can be found by clicking here.

Thanks to everyone for participating. The new cover will be up by the 1st of October. This thread is officially closed.
