IMHO...
I think we have drifted off target a bit.

Historically, if one were in (time and place) a unit where slings were issued, and one had not "disposed" of his issue sling (or was not yet held accountable for a replacement or having received a replacement as a pick-up or from requisition...) one would likely have had a sling.

What we are doing here is answering non-researched and documented questions with our modern reenacting choices and menu options. (Not that a Period Correct choice could not have been for a lad to dislike his sling and throw it away in spite of penalties, or use it to hold up his trousers or use it to make a bedroll, etc.)

And, we can post Period images of guns with and without slings...

I have a sling but do not use it on my Springfield. I use it as Curt said, to make a blanket roll or belt. Sometimes, I do useit, but rarely.

I don't use a sling either. While some photos show that they were used, such as those posted above, many images that I have seen show a general lack of their use.

I tend to use my sling mainly on long marches. It is useful at times, but the majority of the time, I never really notice it.

Though i do have to agree, from photos I've seen, I've not seen to many slings on soldier's rifles.
