  • Vote For the Veteran's Day Cover

    Greetings Everyone:

It is time to vote for the November "Veteran's Day Cover" of the Authentic Campaigner. Please vote for the image that you would like to see on the cover of the Authentic Campaigner that you feel will best represent the idea of a modern military and CW impression to honor our modern veterans. Obviously, the uniform of the modern part of the image plays no part, but do take into consideration their Civil War impression as we do in all other months.

If your image is one of the final three, please provide some background information about the inspiration or impression for the Civil War portion of the image in this thread. For this special month, we would also like to hear why each of you about your modern military service. What do you think might be some of the differences between Civil War military service and modern service? What are the similarities?

To View the Images This Month, Please Click Below:

Re: Vote For the Veteran's Day Cover

      Well...

Thanks to everyone that voted and please let me say ALL veterans of all of our wars are heroes!

One day at Al Asad Air Base in Al Anbar, Iraq in April 2006, I got to thinking of the irony that I was in a grey uniform (newly-issued ACUs look grey now) while in a real combat zone. Me, a Civil War reenactor since 1997 from South Carolina (who usually played grey at events) now serving his country, the United States, in a grey uniform. Totally surreal to me...

      So...

I took a set of these pictures downrange in my uniform with my M16 in period 1860s poses so that when I did get back from the war, I'd be able to get an ambrotype image made to look just like some of them and have them framed. They are my tribute to a long-ago war that forever shaped America and a way to connect with those brave men who made the sacrifice back then.

I felt the similarities were striking to the War of '61 in the war I was in, but also the fact that only 3 years earlier, I was a 'self-draftee' when I, as a civilian, walked into an Army recruiter's office and said 'put me into Iraq the quickest way possible and I want to be an officer if I go- I'm not being left-out of my generation's war'.

Yeah... no joke there. I actually said that to the recruiter.

Well, I got what I wanted and I'm very glad I did it. ;) LOL

Many of the Boys of '61 said the same thing- 'I want to serve.' They were mostly civilians that hadn't tasted military life or the horrors of actual war, but when they did, as I did, it forever changed them.

I'd like to think the war changed me for the better and for the stronger. It certainly put into a very real perspective what our forefathers' sacrifices from ALL American wars meant for me. I will never look at our hobby the same ever again. Americans have never gotten anything worth having for free, despite what some say. I will always be proud of our country and the men and women that make the sacrfices that prove 'freedom isn't free'.

My service was only a small part of this- others have done way more than I.

Thanks for your nomination into the top 3... all are winners here to me.

May God Bless America, may God bless every fellow veteran out there, and may God Bless your families too!

Appreciate the effort and forethought it took to make number one happen. Would've like to have seen more photos that were one picture as opposed to grouping two together. Number one gets my vote! Cheers!

The first picture was submitted by my father Jake Nott. It was taken by Mr. Gibson in Gettysburg while I was on midtour leave from Baghdad, Iraq. I am currently serving in Baghdad with 1BCT 4ID as a Forward Observer. My father served in the 80s also as a FO with the 82nd Airborne of Fort Bragg, NC. He currently reenacts with the boys of Co. A, 4th Va Inf, ANV. It was a spur of the moment picture. We had to borrow a uniform from the reserve Field Artillery Battery in Gettysburg that was getting ready to deploy at the time.

                      Mr. Tipton-

How about a specially-designed military background or screen theme with all of the veteran's submitted photos like you did for April? You could put image #1 in the heading as the main pic.

                      Just a suggestion...

PS- For the record, I think #1 really deserves the title pic honor. But I'm in favor of doing a special Veteran's Day theme if it can be designed in-time by Mr. Tipton. (No extra work to you, Eric... ;))
