Re: Vote For the December Cover

    Folks:

The vote has been close this month. That is true. We have three really good images this month. That is also true.

To debate the impressions, historical accuracy, and overall look and appearance of the submitted images is not a bad thing. It is a good thing and is THE major part of this monthly contest. That being said, let's keep this on an objective basis and not get too personal. Strange as this may sound, I would prefer that the debate happen rather than not... because the scrutiny of what makes a good period image is kind of the whole idea.

Thanks for the discussion and remember that regardless of who the winner is, the point is the journey... not the destination.

The Fighting Boys Mess are an active, knowledgeable group who are dedicated and thorough about living history. I thought it was obvious that I was kidding about them being hooligans. There seems to be a fair amount of kidding going on here, like about what a basic Western Federal impression would look like.
Marc Hermann included a photo a few posts back of a group of “hardcores” at an “event” - that four year long firper immersion they had a while back. A glance at it does show some interesting things. Below are a couple of details I grabbed and juxtaposed with details from Image #3. The picture on the left shows those “shells”, buttoned all weird. On the right, we see the lapels of sack coats folded down, just to be different...and what’s with all the weird hats? So much for historically based impressions, indeed. Without already knowing, you couldn’t tell which parts are from which photo. There are plenty more similarities. I’m just pointing out those two.
You could also merge Image #1 with a period photograph, and for Image #2 all we’d have to do is look at the image on page 226 of ‘Echoes of Glory, the Confederacy’.
I’ve already voted. I’ll close with by repeating the first thing I said when I posted here: All three images are outstanding.

Re: Vote For the December Cover

Actually, boys, my comment was not specifically referring to picture number 3. I also do not remember stating that I didn't like the image, no need for hostility, everyone's got opinions.

Hello all, I am Bernard Cushing, the fourth person in pic #3...as for pic #2, I have been a traditional rudimental drummer for the last 20+ years of my life, and I have never seen in photo or in person, an original drum with “legs” on the batter counter hoop. Just some food for thought :)

Great Photos all! I vote for number three, because it recreates in my eye, a representation of the strong brotherhood of men in arms together. The Patriotic motif on the rubber blanket and the linked arms of Mike, Ian and Bernard demonstrates their loyalties to the Union but also to themselves.

                Bernard,
actually, the drum has all original parts except the head, ropes, and snares which are from cooperman. :wink_smil

That’s great! I have an original in my collection also... Jim does great work at Cooperman...would you by any chance have any more photos of this drum? It would be great to see it since I am a lead drummer I have been obsessed with original and authentic drums

Congratulations to Gerry McGowan and his compatriot Patrick Rooney for the image submittal in a very, very close race this month. Some months, the choice is obvious. This month, we had three great choices and frankly, this produced some of the better discussion we have had as to why an image is the best.

I will have the new cover up in the next day or so. Thanks so much for those who participated in the process.

                        This poll is officially closed.
