Hard, hard, hard, once again to choose, especially between 1 and 3 which are all striking of the truth in their difference, but it is necessary to choose... #3 ;)

As usual, some great pictures posted. I really liked the civilian picture, which did not make the cut and therefore did not compound my dificult decision process.

Based upon the month of January, and the excellent depiction of winter camp, I must choose # 1.

Thanks to all who submitted photos for consideration.

That Trans-Mississippi fella gets my vote. I like it best for the emphasis on the citizen soldier. (The other images are excellent also.)

        #3 all the way.

The civilian image Was the best.. so far as the art of wetplate and authentic 'look' goes.. IMHO. Great job on these three images though. Happy new year folks! I'm looking forward to reliving history and adding to the conversation through 2009.

I like the feel of the Trans-Miss. image. Sporting rifle, with kinfe and pistol in belt. Looks like one of the men headed off to Marks' Mills!

Also looks like a guy that captured me!

Busenbark...if only you were faster, you could have gotten away up the 'mountains' at Marmadukes!

The image I submitted was one that shows a Texas State Troops impression. These men weren't Confederates, but followed the orders of the Governor and defended the state against invasion from the Gulf and up the Sabine as well as fighting the Comanche in the West and putting down Unionist insurrections in the Hill Country.

Clothing was drawn from the state depots as well as being issued bolts of undyed cloth in the field for them to fashion whatever servicable article of clothing they could. While they were, on occasion, drawing depot clothing, it is noted in the OR's how poorly clothed and poorly armed they were. They were armed with antiquated rifles and every image I have seen of a TST shows him with at least one pistol in his belt.

All ladies in Houston and surrounding counties who have cloth on hand, which they can spare, are requested to donate it to the ladies of Crockett for the purpose of making petticoats for the Minute Men of this county, who have "backed out" of the service. We think the petticoat more suitable for them in these times.

I voted for number one as it seems to "stand out" more as a war time image. The guys smoking pipes don't hurt either :D

I like #2 and #3 best for the simple reason that they capture quite well images from the period - the young NCO and the civilian militia/volunteer from Texas. While #1 is interesting, it certainly features "older" soldiers and does not duplicate the avg photo of the period.

I could not decide between 2 and 3 so literally flipped a coin, and our earnest young sgt in #2 won.

Re: Vote For the January Cover of the AC

#2 was taken by Rob Gibson in the Gettysburg studio on 11/23/08. The Liberty Rifles had participated in Remembrance Day ceremonies as the 151st PA that weekend, and photographic evidence shows that frocks were favored in the unit. I was trying to replicate the look of a Sergeant simply wishing to have an image made prior to going to the front. What I did not want was another reenactor image that makes it look like a collodion artist magically sprung up in the middle of the Wilderness in 1864, and walk in with full field gear. The shoulder scales and NCO sword would be badges of rank you'd expect to see in a studio image of a soldier prior to his "hitting the streets."

(The sword, incidentally, is an original Ames manufacture, with an unfinished date stamp: "186 ." )

                          Hi,

That is really cool Mr. Hermann. I was torn between images 2# and 3#, but in the end I went with 3#.

Voted for number #3, looks much like this guy I hunted with several weeks ago from Houma, Louisiana during musket season.

You know, I may sponser a "Authentic-Deer Hunt", Wonder how many would show up?...I would have to have the "six point rule". I would have to have the back strap for the trouble... no fees, just bring beer,we would serve period correct moonshine...you could be Confederate or Federal, up to you....we would all stay in the same camp....no tents of course....we wouold serve a period correct breakfest...on the house.

Also, no one could complain, no one could gripe about the uniforms, no standards that we would need anyone to monitor,no by-laws we would not discuss it,we would just show up,have fun....and have a good deer hunting attitude.

Anyone up for it?...I have several authentic deer bloodline dogs that can be traced back to 1849.

                            How about it boys? ;)
