Re: Vote For the January Cover of the AC

After looking at the images and reading through the responses, i ended up going with number three but folks, there's something you have to remember. This voting thing is a two part process. Yeah, you can have a kick ass image up for consideration and you can be strutting your totally hardkewl stuff in your image which made it to the final three but when it comes down to it (for me, anyway) if you don't hold up your share of the agreement, you shouldn't be in the running ie: putting up the reasoning, historical basis for the image in question. I have seen in months past that people got voted up for a great image and didn't put up any background on their image and they ended up beating out folks who went into depth on the subject matter, composition, and who took the image. Granted, you should put this info up when you're submitting your image in the beginning but not many people go back to when you originally submitted your image to see the details on your historical basis and this is a site where we pride ourselves on the research we do- this carries over into the way we carry ourselves at events and the images we leave for posterity. Basically what it boils down to, for me anyway, is the one that gets my vote isn't just the best out of the lot but it's also the one that is able to back their image up with historical basis for the pose or details about the uniform and equipage.

I'm off my soapbox now.....and if I can find an original soapbox to measure, perhaps I'll start reproducing those so folks can have something to stand on! :wink_smil

      Dale,

You know you'll have a good time, however few or many show up.

At least that's my experience when my 18th century friends use their period bows to the same purpose. No backstrap claimants though, as all of it goes on the big spit on the fire and thence to our plates in pretty short order. And I have some right nice antler handled knives from the deal........

Nice images this time around. I keep hearing a William Falkner story in the back of my head every time I look at that Trans-Mississippi image.

All three photos are great but I like #3, especially the shirt he is wearing.

Doug, I agree with your point. The setting and composition in #1 is excellent; however, the apparent ages of the soldiers really detracts from the "believability" of it.

I went with Marc's #2 because I greatly favor the studio shots that are neat and formal over the I'm-super-dirty-and-roll-my-pant-cuffs shots. I also saw Marc's Sgt. impression at the said event and know he had it all down, and he thoughtfully planned out that image.

And very nice job on #3 as well. Great impression, expression, and a beautiful long arm.

:D I may have to get a Daddy-sitter for that one, and I use those passes sparingly. Or what would be funnier, bring him with me. He may not know what day it is, or what year, or.......but he is still a dead shot. Alas though, his hunting weapon of choice is a little Belgian made WWI he bought right before he left for WWII. Choices, choices, this month's decision is a hard one. I may not vote, and I ALWAYS vote.

                Dale,
I can confirm that Cody (in image #3) can track, shoot, kill and clean deer. At one point as a ranch hand, he lead treks out in Texas. Good friend, great kit and he planned that for years,

And to add to that, Cody's quick with chickens too--as Cami and her Mamma noted on the phone last night "That feller in the picture is the one who bought one of my chickens, and knew what to do with it. Some of the men didn't"

The remainder of the Banks chickens still live and lay in Kentucky today, but are permanently retired from reenacting, and have sold all their gear.

Mrs. Rumble was pleased with her acquisition of a new to her well-used wooden chicken cage. I imagine we'll see a flock at Westville soon enough.

Number 1. Fine looking winter quarters that they built themselves.

I'd vote for Cody, 'cause he's the man, but everybody already knows that, so let's go with No.1.

You didn't vote for a Ground Hornet and thus will pay dearly in the deep, dark Kisatchie woods! I voted for #3 'cause it looks age appropriate and of a real citizen soldier and 'cause Cody is a good friend of mine and because the Trans-Mississippi don't get no respect!:cry_smile

I guess I'll pipe in on image number 1. It was taken in september 2008 at the orange county farmer's museum in Montgomery NY. The men in front of the cabin are members of the 124th NY and all live in the counties that the original regiment was formed out of. All had a hand in building and maintaining not only the cabin directly behind them, but 5 others as well as a period farm house and a working bread oven. Old they may be, but they are tough as nails and quality living historians to the bone. The other two images are great, but I voted for number one mostly cause I'm in it
