  • Vote For the March Cover of the AC

    Greetings Everyone:

It is time to vote for the March 2009 Cover of the Authentic Campaigner. This month, we had a tie for third, so we have four images to select from. Please vote for the image that you feel is the most authentic. If your image is one of the final four, we require that you provide some background information about the inspiration or impression for the image in this thread.

We encourage conversation about the impressions portrayed as well as any documentation that might be available that would add to the discussion. The intent of the selection process is to determine why you think one image is superior to another.

#4 looks like something From Miller's Photographic History!!! Gets my vote for authenticity.

While I'm generally more interested in Confederate images, I have to agree about #4. In addition, the composition of the image is interesting.

I think all are excellant submissions, but you have to vote for one...

I know they're all posed, but somehow #4 looks less so. I found myself wanting to know what's going on with this particular tableau, much more so than with the other three.

History and Impression for image #2
While there are no period images...we have several journals and 2 in particular that were written, that describe the action of such confederates "knocking on the doors day and night for food and cloth and housing". We(the Gourds) are standing on the steps of the 1846 ministry shop of the Shaker village at South Union, Ky. It was in this house that one particular Shaker, Elderess Nancy Moore kept a journal through out the war from 1861-1865.
Our image was inspired by such writings.....
October 29th 1861- " Generals Buckner and Johnston sent their agents down to this neighborhood to press horses and wagons. A man buy the name of Phillips who formerly lived in Louisville was appointed foreman of the clan, to see that their orders were executed. He was very faithful to his Generals; and stern in his demands".
December 8th 1861- "About this time, a very cold morning, two rebel soldiers drove up to the office with a two horse wagon. One of them jumped out, and said, he wished to buy an overcoat or blanket to put around him the weather was so cold he would freeze if he would not get something of the kind. Jefferson took Brother Urbans, overcoat and presented it for trial; telling him five dollars was the charge. The man put the coat on.-wrapped it round himself- and said it was a perfect fit, never was so well suited, but could not pay the price, offered two dollars in Southern notes. The Brethren told him they must have good money, so he pocketed the bill, and started off, saying, he would pay nothing for it, since they refused to take what he offered. The brethren told him they would take the scrip if he could give nothing better. He said they had refused it and now he would keep it. He walked off to his wagon, as he was going he drew the coat around himself and viewed it well, rubbing his hands over his breast and sides. He jumped into the wagon with his fellow traveller who had been waiting in the cold for him, and they put off towards Bowling Green".

I am holding in my hand, the Journal of Elderess Nancy Moore, and there are over 200 pages of accounts just like this where men of both sides came to the village and demanded food, shelter, clothing, medicine, and care. Not once was anyone denied these things. The Shakers at South Union would go on to lose $100,000 in assets, livestock, structures, and crops. They would also serve over 50,000 meals during the war and put up with hateful neighbors who stole from them and tried there very best to put them out!

A side note- I am holding in my hand a 1860 Aimes wrist breaker, that was used in the Battle of Bowling Green and was left there by the man who used it, to the Odd Fellows fraternal order, whom at the time were not meeting due to the war but was started in 1846 and started meeting again in 65', they now own this sword and another.

I hope these stories and the like will at least be helpful in educating this forum!
Thanks for letting us be apart of this race!

Re: Vote For the March Cover of the AC

To me the images were all extremely good. I liked the unique aspect of two, however, it's not got the "period" feel to it to me because of the lack of any similar original images of the same nature (don't take this wrong....fantastic image!!!!). I really liked 4 as it had that unposed sort of "something unbelievable happened here yesterday" sort of look to it. 1 and 3 were a dead lock but in the end I belive I liked the combination of citizen and soldier in 1.
