    Re: Haircut and Facial Hair

I cut my own hair, what I have left at least. For those required by service or occupation you may consider doing this. Using electric clippers with a 1/2 inch gage or less you can buzz it off yourself in a huury. With sizzors you can trim up over the ears and neck for work requirements. Skipping a cut a week or two before an event will certainly give you a soldier look of the time.

"Popular fashion" of the time would be found in those pictures. Human vanity is relative to the time period as well and today's standards cannot be applied to that of the 1860s.

Lucky for me the RR could care less about what we look like as long as we are sober and relatively awake. Since I have a self shaving head I keep my hair rather short at all times. Normally I wear a long full beard. However when I did have hair I went for the parted on the side impregnated with hair goop look. Maybe thats why my hair fell out.

I am also active duty so I really do not have a choice. Fortunately my facial hair grows pretty fast so I at least get a scruffy look for some events.

I have a red mop growing on my head, so I have to keep my hair cut short. To keep it from showing too much at events, I wear my sleeping cap under my slouch hat.

My job does'nt care how I look. I grow what I call my 'militant Amish" beard. My wife hates it, but it's a man's world anyway. It's different than what most reenactors grow, from what I've seen most stay with the modern looking styles. I actually had some one ask me If I was Amish, or people call me Abe Lincoln. I then get to explain that this was a popular 19th century beard style. Just another teaching moment.
