    Vote For the July Cover

    Greetings Everyone:

    It is time to vote for the July 2009 Cover of the Authentic Campaigner. Since we stopped the voting for the June cover due to the untimely death of Charles Heath, these are the three finalists from the images submitted for June.

    Please vote for the image that you feel is the most authentic. If your image is one of the final three, we require that you provide some background information about the inspiration or impression for the image in this thread.

    We encourage conversation about the impressions portrayed as well as any documentation that might be available that would add to the discussion. The intent of the selection process is to determine why you think one image is superior to another.

    I voted for #3. The reason being that it looks like an original. Fantastic image.

      I'm with brother Gane. Seeing the recreated Ft. Sanders is even more impressive in person.

        I voted for photo #1 because it does portray Andrew and Silas Chandler, Co. F, 44th Mississippi Infantry portrayed by Lewis Robinson and Marvin Greer.

          I'm with Guy and Bryant...#3 all the way.I am in that image(somewhere)and it really turned out great!Very nice work on that one Wendell!

            Im voting 3 because the first thing that came to mind was, "What is an original doing in the voting??"

              Did that infantry regiment carry artillery short swords and US M-1880 Hunting knifes?

              I voted #3 because that one does look like an original image.

                Image number three was taken at the recreated Fort Sanders NW bastion in Corryton TN in October 2008. The site is about 20 miles NE of the original fort. No portion of the original Fort Sanders exist.

                Although no original image of the Confederate dead exists, this image , by Wendell Decker, represents what a portion of the trench may have looked like after the short, ill-fated, assault. I have submited this image with Mr Decker's permission.
                There is an original image of the fort taken in the spring of '64,following the assault. Orlando Poe's plans for the earthen forts in Knoxville were used to create the pictured portion. It is a full scale representation, but only with bodies in the trenches can one truly appreciate the difficulty the assaulting forces faced.
                I have attached what is known as the "common view of NW bastion".

                    I thought #1 would be a shoe-in but it looks like people prefer another image of casulities.

                      As far as authentic photos go...the realism in #3 is without a doubt right on. I could not find one detail in that photo that would lead one to believe it was a modern image. Well done!!

                        I, too, liked # 1 because of the theme of the picture or what it is trying to express. Something we don't often see, read, or hear about. However, it is not as nicely done as # 3. Also, I am a bit biased . My son and I are laying somewhere in the middle of that pile of dead. I believe # 3 would have been a little more realistic if some of the dead had been up on the wall or outside of the ditch. Good job Greg.

                          Out of the 25 years of being in the hobby , it is one of the best and most realistic photos of dead I have seen

                            Number Three looks good, definitely, but I will not vote for it. "A" for effort but I feel that staged photos like these are in bad taste. Sorry guys. :(
