    Greetings Everyone:

It is time to vote for the August 2009 Cover of the Authentic Campaigner.

Please vote for the image that you feel is the most authentic. If your image is one of the final three, we require that you provide some background information about the inspiration or impression for the image in this thread.

We encourage conversation about the impressions portrayed as well as any documentation that might be available that would add to the discussion. The intent of the selection process is to determine why you think one image is superior to another.

    Background on Image #1

    IMAGE #1:

Paul Boccadoro and Kyle Stetz in a glass ambrotype taken by Del Hilbert in July 2009. The photograph was inspired by the attached original image.

This project was about 7 months in the making, and the target was copied from the original photo and then actually shot at a live firing session our group had at our winter drill (photo also attached).

We obviously didn't have those cadet uniforms in the original photo, so we used matching US frocks and dark blue trousers we had. The addition of extra trim on the frock collars with buttons tweaked it enough away from a "standard" US frock without going overboard. We also added matching white webbing gear for fun, and our standing positions are the same except for some slight modification on my part to see my belt plate. The shakos are copied directly from the photo and from examining other originals. We forwent the white gloves because it'd look like mickey mouse hands up against our dark uniforms.

Our target is also a bit smaller (32" D.) than the original (maybe 36" D.) just for ease of transportation and storage. Like the original photo, we put black paper behind the holes in the white space of the target so they'd show up on camera.

Re: Vote For the August Cover

I voted for number 3. The other photos were absolutely wonderful and I had a hard time making up my mind. So when I get into such a situation, I choose those that represent or have some representation of the civilian side of the time. I think we are seeing images of great quality. Everyone I think deserves congratulations on their photos.

My first thought was to vote for number one. Just because it is so well done and is based on an original.
But then I saw number 3. I have a thing for ocupational images.
It was tough choice this time. I had to go with number three.

Wow.....first off great images to all. This one was the hardest for me to pick so far. #3 is a great occupational image, and the studio was set up quite nice. #2 is a GREAT image of a company in the field, the poses were terrific. #1 is my pick for this month. Paul, you guys did a great job with the re-creation image. I'm a fan of early war militias anyhow, and this one is great. Good job to all!

Image #2 was my submittal. There's not much to say about it. It was taken at Bentonville, N.C. ca.1993. The subject is a company from the National Regiment that was there for a reenactment. The company was made up of members from Co. I, 7th Wisc.; the Southern Guard; and Co. K, 1st Penn. Reserves. We weren't attempting to replicate any specific known image, nor do I remember who the artist was that exposed the photo.

All I can add is that I think the photo turned out well and that we looked pretty good for the early 1990s. Those that I can identify in the photo are: Sam Cathey, Doug Smith, Will "Huck" Green, Fred Rickard, Leo Montalto, Mallen Cunningham, Ken Mink, Tom "Scampi" Galleher, Tim Krapf, Eric Mink, John Henry Kurtz, Troy Cool, Mark McNeirney, Pat Sheen, and Mike Davis.

I spot a very young Huck. I believe the could have or was Claude(I can't remember his last name). Some old timers from the hobby can be spotted. So since I am in this photo, I'm going to vote for it.

Re: Vote For the August Cover

This is one time where, I believe, the hyperbolic "best images ever!" catchphrase rings true.

Each image has an original counterpart; #1, of course, has its iconic inspiration...#2 looks like a long-lost company from the series of group photos of the 93rd New York...#3 is a dead-ringer for any number of occupational images in the years prior to and including the war.

Paul and Kyle, however, went the extra mile with the prep work that went into their image. I'm a fan of studio images that don't read as reenactors wanting to show off their gear, sitting in front of a backdrop, dripping with sweat and covered in grime, loaded down with a kitchen sink. This image reflects something that was also likely carefully composed and thought out in 1861, when the original was made.
