  • Wanna Be on the September Cover of the AC?

    Greetings Everyone:

This month, we are doing this a day early, because I am going out of town tomorrow. So, the question is, "Wanna Be on the September Cover of the Authentic Campaigner?"

We are looking for images that best-exemplify the look of the authentic living historian. Images taken with period technology only are required (wet plate, pencil drawing, field sketches, etc.) Please refrain from submitting an image that you have submitted within the last year. We are continuously looking for fresh images and have a few days to gather the candidates. Thanks! Also, please, no "dead" images this month. Honestly, I don't mind them, but we have had two in the last several months and that is enough for a while. ;)

    Submission Guidelines:

    1) We will accept the first ten image submissions only. The thread will be closed after the tenth image is submitted, and any images submitted after the tenth will be deleted from the thread.

    2) Once we have ten images, the staff will select the final three. The final three will then be put up for a general vote to the membership of the forum. The winning image will be placed on the front "cover" of the web site for one month.

    3) Make sure and attach the photo to your post. If necessary, we will crop the photo for the best fit.

    4) The Moderators/Administrators reserve the right to remove any submittals that they feel don't meet the standards of the Authentic Campaigner.

Now, let's see your best images!

The Manetto Hill Methodist Church was built in 1857, and moved to the site in 1963.

Our inspiration was drawn from period images that tend to concentrate on the "big picture," particularly when structures of note were concerned, with the action in the foreground taken from a mid-war image of what is likely the 45th or 20th NY, depicting what appears to be guard checking a soldier's pass.

Here's one we did at Westville last year. The fellas pictured are Myself (Chris Henderson), Gary Bergstrom, and Dylan Franklin. We were the town woodworkers and we're pictured with our big project for the weekend- a 4 foot long coffin. The image was taken by Todd Harrington.

Re: Wanna Be on the September Cover of the AC?

This is an attempt to emulate an image of a Tennessee state representative candidate. I took inspiration from William G Brownlow's image. He was a representative to the East Tennessee Convention in 1861. He created great difficulty for the state after the war. He was Tennessee's governor immediately following the war and the Senator. This man was and is despised by many in East Tennessee. I am however, not as affluent in my attire as "The Parson". I also really needed a vest.

Just remember that we only accept the first ten images. Thanks everyone.

Presented, is a tintype taken by Terry Whittington during filming for the Vicksburg National Military Park in State Farm, Va. (old HBO "John Adams" site).

We portrayed elements of US Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa troops. I believe that we were asked to provide a casual scene after marching alongside General Sherman for this particular photo.

Remember that last months second and third place vote getters can resubmit this month.

...This was one of those times that it was pretty apparent which image was going to win. That being said, the other two finalists were very good as well. Good enough that next month, we will allow images that were submitted within the last year to be submitted again. We have had a few months where some very good images didn't make the cut because of what they were up against. Let's give them another shot. - Eirc Tipton, 07-21-2009, 01:32 PM
