    Vote For the September Cover of the AC

    Greetings Everyone:

    It is time to vote for the September 2009 Cover of the Authentic Campaigner.

    Please vote for the image that you feel is the most authentic. We had a tie for third, so this month, there are four images to choose from. If your image is one of the final four, we require that you provide some background information about the inspiration or impression for the image in this thread.

    We encourage conversation about the impressions portrayed as well as any documentation that might be available that would add to the discussion. The intent of the selection process is to determine why you think one image is superior to another.

      Our image, #1, was inspired by the countless outdoor images during the war that were clearly composed by a photographer wishing to document "Incidents of the War," not a picture commissioned by participants. In these images, as seen in the first example, the photographer's goal almost primarily seems to be the recording of the landmark, in this case an 1850s church building that has been lovingly preserved.

      The action at camera center is based on a series taken at the Georgetown Aqueduct, in which a similar action of what we imagine to be a "where are your papers?" scenario is being played out.

      The civilians, whether living in occupied territory or not, have but little choice in the matter — the army is here, but it's still THEIR church, even if someone has decided to call it a headquarters. The historic images showing the mingling of civilians and soldiers near prominent town landmarks were the origin for this.

        As always another month of great photos. It was very hard to choose just one photo. I decided to pick number one. It is a very well studied photo that shows the interaction between military and civilian personalities. A good cross section representation of our hobby. A very believable image. Job well done.:)

              While I like all of the images, I had a tough time deciding between Images #1 & #3.

              Ultimately, my vote goes to Image #1.

                1 and 3 tied me up too. In the end, I think it was the lady hanging out of the window on the left that pulled my vote for #1. The image seems extremely real!

                    Image #4 is indicitive of the lack of uniforms, even among the officers, of the Missouri State Guard. Organized and equipped in the field, there was very little to distinguish them from the civilian population. It could just as well be a walking stick cast upon the shoulder. This may be a reason there are so few identified MSG images available for comparison; that and the fact it is a short-lived organization.

                    The sword is an original non-regulation Horstmann "Indian Princess" pommel sword from the 1830-1840 period. You can just make out the scroll, with the motto of Missouri, Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto, applied in gilt upon the blade.

                      I believe the "lighting" and "shadowing" as much as anything are top-notch in IMAGE #1. The folks are right good as well although I'm tempted to crop out the fellars on the far right. Nothing personal...just like the image without 'em. One of the sellers is the lady in the doorway with her hands on her hips. Seems very true to form.

                        I had to go with #4. Kip Lindberg is perhaps the most knowledgable living historian on the Missouri State Guard, and unquestionably the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet.

                        Oh, and the image is pretty dang good, too.

                          I also had to go with #4. This is the best image I have seen in awhile and I think it's great to see an original early militia officers sword represented. The sword to me speaks for the entire picture and would have identified that man in the field as an officer. This style sword came in many variations. Nice image!

                            I too liked #4 the best and voted when only about a dozen votes had been cast and only 1 post. #4 spoke to me the loudest. clothes, the sword, and the hair makes this the best one IMHO. I can just imagine him there in MO along the border!

                              1 and 3 were both excellent but #1 reminded me of the Miller's I couldn't keep my hands off when I was supposed to be studying in the Library.Well smote Lads!
