I figure a lot of the items they had would have been confiscated anyways so why weigh yourself down with extra equipage. Besides that who goes into battle expecting to be captured, especially wearing federal blouses considering the Federal governments stance on enemy soldiers in Union uniforms.

I really like Image # 3 because it is such an intimate portrait; however, knowing how challenging it can be to take such a clear image of not one but several horses, I have to cast my vote for #1.

Image #1 was the result of a great deal of research on the part of Mr. Chad Wrinn and the great talent of Mr. Wendell Decker. It took us forever to get the horses to stand still, because on the other side of the camera was a large crowd, which made it difficult for all involved.Chad made sure that we looked the part down to the last detail.I think that it turned out to be a very nice image representing a group of mounted infantry soldiers.

I was going to say something similar to what Carl stated, but since he beat me to it, I will suffice with a ditto.

Hawke-man would be well served to spend some more time with original period images of young women. Perhaps a good place to start would be the ones on Miss Allen's web site.

I looked and looked and can't see any substantive difference between the two impressions. They seem perfectly equal to me. The dresses, hair styles, etc. are even the same social class and fashion type, and are apparently chosen to evoke a typical kind of person from the era--what I call "Godey's girls," fashionable, novel-reading, romantic, pampered young ladies. What specifically do you think makes one look more modern than the other?

I've got to vote for #3, though all 3 are outstanding. Sorry fellas, but 2 pretty ladies in such an excellent period image gets my vote. Something completely different.

Hawke Man yore eyes must not work too well at 6:30 AM. Have a cup of coffee and look again. I don't see a dimes worth of difference in those lovely ladies! One of the best civilian images I've seen in years.

Actually if you read accounts of Wilder's brigade, many managed to modify their issued '51 knapsacks and strap them to the saddle. There's a good COMH article (plate) which describes this as well.

I voted for #3...perfect civilian image that doesn't look like reenactors.

I agree that Image 3 is very good. Both ladies look the part in my opinion. However, I disagree with the faults with image 1. Your above reference says "many" and not all. 4 out of 5 men are not wearing a knapsack. You see three bed rolls. Grumble Jones' brigade who were involved in the same location and activity as the folks we were portraying talk about sleeping in the saddle and the harsh cold conditions due to the elevation of entry to the battle field we are standing on. We felt like the bed rolls (mind you with no gear inside...simply a quick fix for a blanket) were a reasonable idea for guys sleeping in the saddle in cold weather (since no exact information was available).
Another note: I think Windell did a fantastic job with the image. Notice that there are 5 men and only 4 horses. The technique used in the image brilliantly hides that. However, the 5th man wearning a knapsack could simply be because he carrying gear because he didn't have a horse to mount?
Again, I really like image 3 as well, but I think that image 1 reflects a great deal of thought and a great deal of research and a heck-of-a-lot of skill by the photographer.

You have no argument from me. I've done mounted infantry on several occasions over the years. There was some discussion about whether or not to wear your bedding or pack it on the saddle. Simply stating what solution the boys of Wilder's brigade came up with.

I still like image 3 as it looks like an original.

HUH? We must not be looking at the same civilian image. The first two images are nice but #3 nails it for me. ~G

Re: Vote For the October Cover

Even though I am partial to folks with horses, number 3 has it for me. I always look at these cover choices from the standpoint of which one looks like an original to me. There are certainly items that stand out: good kit, correct hair (often the hardest feature to master) pose, setting, and composition, which seems to often be overlooked in these polls.

The girls in #3 have all the correct elements of a period photograph. From the details to the impressions, to the composition and "sentiment" behind the image.

Number 1 is a nifty image, and obviously a lot of thought went into the picture, but there is something not right about it from my perspective of looking like a period image, and that's what I make my judgement on.

                            Take care,

Image #1 got my vote, not only for the perfect setting"original battlefield"...but also for the research that went into the impressions..#3 is a great image but,in my opinion, getting 4 horses to stay still enough to strike an image takes a lot more work than sitting in a chair..:tounge_sm
