Re: Gonna be taking applications for additional mod help

I think that people of all the currents have right come here for listen, read, study and question "intelligently" for the improvement of their hobby, because we all had to begin the hobby in mainstreams and if anybody don't given the hand we would have stayed in front of the door.
Now if it is for contesting the choices of the current that represents this forum, they effectively have make nothing here, "when you go to a neighbour you do not put your feet on the table" and there are spaces for all, forums for the various currents, I am don’t speak about CW on a cooking forum (or CW cooking only ;) ).
For EFUBU or not EFUBU, I also think that the knowledge and the wisdom of people who do not practise EFUBU are useful for all, historically, humanely, etc..

As I see it, there are two areas that need to be addressed. Many people post in the open forum where those post would be better suited for social groups or pm's. I see no problem for people posting such post in the sinks or in the AAR's for an event they plan to attend or attended, but posting asinine post in areas devoted to research and the such, serve little purpose other than to irritate people. Secondly, if a moderator has a personal agenda, then they don't need to be a moderator! Finally, it is clear that there has been an influx of people with a mainstream mindset into the AC recently. If they have come for information and to improve themselves, then that is good. If they have come to bring their us against them ideas, then they should be sent away, deleted, purged or simply shouted down or what ever it takes. The Authentic Campaigner is for people that campaign authentically and not keyboard types that never plan to improve or attend an EFUBU. They take up space and irritate people who are here for improvement of this section of the hobby.
See the new moderator application - I think you'll see that it was designed with these very concerns in mind.

      We're now officially taking applications.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I've never moderated anything bigger than a tiny temporary email list, and wouldn't be good at it, unfortunately. I remember watching westerns when I was very young and asking my mother, why do people hold back the men who want to fight? My impulse has always been to either join the side I cared about, if it was losing, and help, or stand back and watch the fun. Apparently I was skipped over when the moderating genes were handed out.

          Pete,

He is a good choice for the job, but not detracting from Hank's knowledge or abilities, that forum already has top notch moderators. They are perhaps the most qualified to do so than on any board or forum.

Garrison, I was not insenuating that Hank should take over moderating jobs from one of the existing ones over there..I was just using Hank as an example of the kind of calibre of people we need moderating these threads, in addition to the several good ones we have here currently. I dont think this is about replacing Mods as it is more about recruiting help to assist the current ones. They are self admittedly understaffed and could use the help in all folders. Sorry that my point was not more clear.

                Tim -
Sounds good in the written word but I'm not sure, pratically-speaking, that is as desirable a solution as you seem to suggest. There's a learning curve here with moderating and I could name two dozen mods who volunteered in the past and then, once adorned with the "dropdown menu of unspeakable power and authority" never lifted a finger.

And I can point to active hobbiests who are on the mod staff now who never moderate at all. Not throwing anybody under the bus here, but its true.

Lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater here. We could bring on 10 new mods and only have one that sticks. If that one that sticks is the only one left moderating, he/she is going to get burnt out really fast.

We've had 314 reported posts just in the last 30 days. This isn't just an honorary position - it seriously isn't.

I was curious,of the candidates are there any that have a musician's background that could moderate the "Music of the Civil War" folder? Not to step on any toes here, just sayin' that would be a plus.

                    Paul,

I get a drop down message that I do not have enough posts to see the moderator application. I'm still not sure if joining the moderator corps would be right for me or the forum, but I'd like to see the application as I consider the prospect.

Not that I'd have a say in any of this (haven't attended an event since Rich Mountain, though I have been over to Afghanistan twice), but I still bump around the site some. The above post describes EXACTLY how the mods were when I first starting perusing this site back in the spring of 2001.

I'm not sure if that was a good thing, but it sure made it interesting seeing the heads roll... BTW, I think the current set of Mods are as good as it gets.

Re: Gonna be taking applications for additional mod help

We have received about (20) applications thusfar. Justin, Matt, Tripp and I have batted around the various applications and have agreed on (5) additional moderators.

We may not be done beyond the five - there's some conjecture about adding even a couple more beyond that.

Bottom line - with a 7,000 member forum, we don't have enough moderators. And we don't have certain geographies represented well enough to insure that we're always making well-informed decisions.

We'll be making an official announcement this weekend.

                                Paul,

If I didn't consider it a conflict of interests I would apply. I am certainly anxious to help you and the forum out in any way I can, but understand that it is very difficult for someone who makes a considerable percentage of their income from the forum and its members to be impartial.

Nevertheless, as you and the other mods I am sure aware, I do like that "alert" button an awful lot. For those folks that would like to be mods but maybe don't qualify for whatever reason, do some of your own policing and use that alert button whenever you feel it necessary. Explain your reasons in the comments section of the alert clearly and concisely, or if the infraction is totally off the wall be funny with it (I remember it tickled a few folks when my comment on a particular post merely read "Asinine.") Every legitimate alert helps the mods a great deal, and generally gets results.

Good luck to the news mods! We are all indebted to the folks that take on thankless but necessary jobs!
