  • Vote For the January Cover of the AC

    Greetings Everyone:

It is time to vote for the January 2010 Cover of the Authentic Campaigner. Since we honored John Crabb on the cover for December, these three are the result of the December selection process that we completed.

Please vote for the image that you feel is the most authentic. If your image is one of the final three, we require that you provide some background information about the inspiration or impression for the image in this thread.

We encourage conversation about the impressions portrayed as well as any documentation that might be available that would add to the discussion. The intent of the selection process is to determine why you think one image is superior to another.

Thanks to everyone who submitted. Good luck to the finalists.

Mine was number two. We were just up at This is the Place, a living history site in Salt Lake City, after some meetings and a camp out, and George Stapleford, the photographer, was working up there that day. We were all just sitting around in the yard of one of the homes, and he set up a picture for us. It really captured the spirit of the afternoon, it was a warm day in late August or maybe early September. The kind of day you sit on the grass and sip juleps. Glad you guys liked it.

                Merry Christmas to all.
                My image is No 1.
It is a full plate by Todd Harrington.
It contains 2 UK based LazyJacks and 4 Tater Mess members.
We wanted to capture a moment of Federals on the march during the Atlanta Campaign.
I think it looks all the better for seeing Jay carrying a Henry repeating Rifle, and is very atmospheric with us having just crossed the flooded woods.

                Thanks for your consideration.

They are all excellent , difficult choice, but three stands out in realism, would mistake this as a period photo with out a doubt.

                      Well done by all parties.

No. 1 looks like it's right out of the LoC database. Dirty, muddy roads and all. Reminds me just a bit of the NY Engineers building the corduroy road. I also like the subtle Henry rifle... it's like one of those 'Ah hah!' moments when you find an interesting small detail in an LoC photo. Not the usual reenactor showing off his cool new stuff.

No. 2 has an outstanding setting but what stands out the most are the facial expressions. No one is trying too hard to look old timey. Really tough to get everyone with a good expression.

No. 3 is also unique, and I really like the fellow on the right. But the officer strikes me as having a little more contemporary appearance in build and hair. Yes, I'm sure there's an original photo of a dude somewhere that has a similar build/hairdo, but I'm just generally speaking here.

                        Great points, Paul!

Image #1 was a treat to be a, (if not obscure/subtle) part of.

What that crazy Scot, Jason, didn't mention was Todd took this image 3 times, all on full plates. Each one offered an entirely different result of detail or depth. I think among the many unique things I really like about it (beyond Paul's thoughts) is the depth in the distance achieved (i.e. down the road on the other side of the creek), the detail of the leaves/trees, the reflection of the trees and soldiers in the water, and how you don't have a lot of up-close face shots as most are in the obscured light. To me it just has a grainy, darker, skulky, uneasy feel to it.

The most fun thing about this image was Jason. For any of you vets of Piney, BGR or Bummers know, hearing him talk/swear in that Scottish accent is something you never get over. You can't tell, but both of the men crossing the swollen creek have their brogans slung over their shoulders. Hearing Jason's "vocal exclamations" the two times he dropped and submerged them into the creek, was priceless.

They are all very good, but this one is just unique and Jason if you ever get tired of it, I'd love to have it.

                          Hi Jay,
Reading your comments and thoughts brought back lots of good memories and had me laughing big time.
I think any image containing Dave West would have a Skulky, uneasy feel to it:tounge_sm.

If memory serves me right the third time the image was struck it was a 25 second exposure .
Todd worked with us as the utmost proffessional that we all know him to be and thanks again Todd.

Jay,you can have the image as a swap for your Henry!

Hope to see y,all at In the van in August.

                          Cheers,
