Re: Vote for the April Cover of the AC

Image #1 is impressive, espcially seeing that US MARINE impressions are something you do not see every day. IMO #2, #3 have more of a period feel to them. Though I've seen originals with the sitter smiling it just did not work for me in #2. Image #3 on the other had nailed it. ~Gary

Re: Vote for the April Cover of the AC

It is pretty damn impressive to see that many guys put together one very specific impression in number 1. It is Obvious how much time and research went into it and I am sure it would have been quite a site at the event. Although image 3 had me jaw dropped. If the image had not been submitted on the forum, I would have never been able to tell it was not a period image. So number 3 gets my vote, hands down.

Has anyone asked the question, "Is it Really a Civil War Picture?" about the Marines at Harper Ferry Picture. I like it and think that it looks very good but does it fit ??

Herman Melville called John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry " The meteor of the War" . I would say it is very fitting here.

I agree with Pete, Pic #1 is very fitting. I like all three, but pic #1 stands out the most to me. It is something different and represents one side of our hobby that often times gets overlooked. Just an excellent pic! It would add something new to the front cover that hasn't been seen yet.

Given the impact of those events in 1859.... how does it not?

I voted for #3, while the others are nice and to be proud of, three is in another league...IMO.

Just have to go with number three. One was great but compared to number three, ehh. It cannot beat the fact that three looks like its been sitting around for about 150 years. Number two would have been my choice but the smile was too extreme. I have seen smiles in period photos but not that outstanding. If it was a little more subdued I would have went for it.

This is the Marine sactioned Civil War living history group, correct Gunny? If memory serves, Joe Blunt made these uniforms. As for "does it fit" in this photo contest, the irony of troops from the Federal Government supporting the Govt of Virginia against US citizens in revolt is a unique moment in our history...so I think it fits. I voted for #3 based on historical fidelity to a thousand photos just like it, the fact that there are no known photos of the Marines at Harper's Ferry and because many of the subjects are bit too "well fed" for Marines. Heck if it were up to me, we would be using original photos in this contest to stimulate research, learn something and have fun. But that is not what the contest is about.

                            Doug,

You are correct. The USMCHC is officially recognized by the Marine Corps, and yes... Joe Blunt made many of the Uniforms used pre-1870 by the organization. The USMCHC does not participate in reenactments of tactical, they only do educational programs. They cover Revolutionary period to modern times.

Doug called the Marines "fat"! But I do agree that original photos would better serve the community than play like photos. But what do I know? I think the camera box traps your spirit.
