A little more info about the photo:
My impression is a house servant/seamstress named Charity,
& the photo was taken at the Battle of Olustee event (feb '10).
    Great image.

Is there an extant image of a female servant or slave woman which influenced this ?

Nic Clark and pard = Does not look like Elena Kagan in jean.

Sorry I forgot! My photo is based off of several that Timothy O'Sullivan here after the fall of Fort Fisher. Most of the soldiers wore their gear over their great coats(it was January) and had army hats. My pose is by our fully operational reproduction 32 pound rifled and banded artillery piece. The stance is based off a solder photographed next to a cannon at right shoulder shift. My photo has one problem already noted, there were no trees near the fort at all during the war. This was hard to avoid, as was the modern sand fence which Harry kindly made sure was out of the photo. But it is on one of the original mounds of the most impressive earthen fort on the coast. Attached are a few of my inspiration photos.

        Thanks!

Number 2 got my vote. I did the Ft. Fisher events back in January, and leading up to the event I found several original photos like the ones of Federals at the fort. The civilian hat was a very nice touch, as that was one thing that really stuck out to me while reviewing the original photos was the number of civilian hats in the ranks of eastern troops late in the war.

Miss Mia, Although not a House Servant, I thought of this photo when I saw yours. A portrait of Miss Sarah Forbes Bonetta, the "African Princess". A carte-de-visite portrait taken at Merrick & Co.'s photographic studio at 33 Western Road, Brighton, before her marriage to James Labulo Davies in 1862.

I think she might have found the pose for her next image. Just saying.
