  • August 2010 Cover Image: Voting

I'm not convinced we need to 'vet' this group of images elsewhere down to Top 3. Let's see how we do with voting on Top 10. (Next time, though, I think we should take first 5. Just run with it. :D )

All back stories can be found here:

There is a decent amount of conversation about (#7) John Yates Beall in the OR's. I'm afraid they are mingled in with his distant cousin, Lloyd Beall CSMC.

One of several references, starting bottom of page 305.

OK, this was the hardest decision ever on cover images. Great ones this month.

Image 1 is my people and all that, but I have to go with the John Yates Beall. Glad I checked in before I left for a week.

I'll second that. All deserving of a cover shot. How about a collage? ;)

Normally I vote for the one that looks the most authentic but thats hard to do this month! I ended up choosing number 2 just because I think it is a great picture.

Now now, that'd make them each very small!

I really enjoyed the photo submissions this month! Thanks to all of you who shared an image and a story. I had a hard time picking just one to vote for, but in the end I went with image 10.

I went with #3, Col. Elias Peissner, not only because my people were also New Yawkers, but because he has a little "paunch" which should make a few middle-aged reenactors feel better about themselves.

Re: August 2010 Cover Image: Voting

I have thought some time on this and have come to what has been a very hard decision.

All of these photo submissions and back stories advance the hobby and (more importantly) research. I normally vote for the cover image when it comes up each month but for this specific month I choose NOT to vote in this poll because I will not vote on original images as a "favorite" based on my specific background of research.

I do not dispute or disregard the criteria outlined for voting because it is a great concept that many of us on this forum strive to meet. The main reason why I choose not to vote is due to the fact that ALL original images tell us something about the specific time period that that individual image was struck/taken. For me, to choose one "favorite" image based on my research background may (although unintentionally) discard the rest as less important. ALL of these images are important to all of us as researchers of this period in time.

I did like the idea of choosing all images as a collage but definitly understand that they would be so small as to detract from the original individual images themselves.

So, my reasoning given, I reluctantly choose for the first time ever (when capable) not to vote in this monthly poll.
