  • Joplin, MO History Teachers urgently need your help

I hope this is the right place to post this request. If not, mods kindly move it to a more appropriate location.

I know that there are lots of educators, history enthusiasts, and museum people on this forum. I'm hoping that you might be able to pitch in and help. As you all know, Joplin, Missouri was hit by a devastating tornado recently. History classrooms were destroyed, and the dedicated teachers are now frantically trying to put together decent learning environments for Joplin's young people. Time is of the essence -- the new term starts in a couple of months.

They need your assistance, especially in the shape of posters, books, maps, lesson plans, videos, pamphlets, anything to hang on walls or that can be used to teach history or geography. These items should be sent to Ms. Travis, the head of social studies at Joplin High School. I don't feel comfortable posting the lady's name and home address (which is all the information I have available) on line, but I would be more than happy to send the info to you individually. Just send me a private message via this forum, and give me your email address.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Regards,

    Silvana

I have some items that might be helpful, but unless they're willing to share liberally it wouldn't be the same from class to class. I will contact the head of our local school history department to see if they have text books available. If I can't get a shipment ready right away at the least could pack the Bonneville's cargo bay with books and drop off on the way through to Wilson's Creek. If I can get a batch of textbooks, I could mail a sample to Ms. Travis so she could work on her lesson plans in the meantime.

Oops -- now I see I was supposed to PM you. I'll ask around and get a message to you to forward to Joplin.

Thanks, Paul. That's fantastic. I imagine that there isn't a school mailing address right now, which is why she only gave her home address. I'll write to her and ask her permission to post it, or else perhaps she can give a specific address for drop-offs.

I knew this was the right place to ask!

My wife has been teaching for 41 years. She used to teach AP history but now teaches Gifted Elementary. She has posters, books, and units she can give. I will be coming up to Wilson's Creek in August and can either make a side trip to Joplin or have teachers meet me in Springfield. There is a lot of stuff she is willing to give her fellow teachers. I will PM you her email so you can send her the info. She says she knew she was keeping this stuff in our attic for a reason!

Okay, here's a mailing address for those who want to ship materials:

            Joplin High School classroom materials
            c/o Amber Travis
            102 Gray Ave.
            Joplin, MO 64801

I gather the school buildings aren't ready yet & so there's no way to receive materials there.

Anyone who would like to contact Ms. Travis directly, please pm me, and I'll forward her home address and contact info.

I asked her about monetary donations. That would be great -- make the check out to Joplin High School or to Amber Travis.

Thanks to all for your help!!
