  • Remains from the USS Monitor to be interred on Friday, March 8, at Arlington Cemetery

For those who do not know, NOAA is planning to inter the remains found in the turret of the USS Monitor. They have been kept at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) Central Identification Laboratory since they have been found, but I guess they have done all they could to try to identify them, and they are to be interned at Arlington Cemetery with full military honors along with a marker dedicated to the entire crew of the USS Monitor. The internment is open to the public for anyone in the area interested in attending. More info can be found at these websites:

If they cannot be identified (and that seems like a herculean task) this seems like a fitting rest. I guess some old sailors might prefer they rest at sea.

Some researchers think that one of the bodies may belong to Welsh-born Robert Williams, who served as a fireman aboard the Monitor. They mostly say that because the skeleton matches his height, but there's no real way to know for sure.

I could see a burial at sea being appropriate, but the families seem to appreciate the Arlington burial:

I'm glad to see that, even after all this time, some people are still willing to take the time to honor those who fell during the war.
