    Different Time Periods for the AC?

    Greetings!

    Well folks, we are in the last few hours of our World War I extravaganza. First off, thank you for visiting today. We used to do this every year and I really wanted to do it again because it's fun to blow off a little steam now and again. The purpose of this year's April Fools was a little different than past years. We have done Star Trek, Monty Python and the Super Friends. None of those was remotely serious. This year, I wanted to do something that had a little more purpose. We said in the announcement that we were going to go "all WWI". Well, that's not the case... entirely.

    With all of the discussions about the 150ths, dwindling numbers, bad economy and the migration of people to other time periods, Paul and I have been discussing on-and-off whether the AC should take the plunge and explore other time periods. Don't worry. We have no plans to go "all WWI". The Civil War is our home and it is here to stay. We have tried to open it up a little bit by allowing discussions about other time periods in The Sinks, but other than our "What Time Periods Do You Portray?" thread, there hasn't been much discussion other than Civil War.

    This leads me to my question to you. What would you think if the Authentic Campaigner branched out to include the different time periods? I won't color your opinion one way or the other. This is an entirely open question. There is no wrong answer. I am just curious about your thoughts. If we didn't do it, we would be just fine, so this is not a do-or-die proposition.

    I vote no, there are forums already in place to discuss other periods. I also think it would become way to overwhelming to moderate.

      I vote no. Even though I love WW1 reenacting and I am interested in other time periods, the AC is THE place for Civil War studies. It should pride itself on a single thing. Opening it up to other time periods also makes it harder to moderate. If you guys decide to open it up to WW1, I'd gladly mod that page, however for now, when I need to find a good link on what type of beeswax to use for my thread on the seams of my epaulets for my BG kersey RDII, this is the spot for it.

        I think we should stay Civil War only. That's the purpose of the forum and should remain so. I think too many wars would get confusing when looking for information.

          I know I'm relatively new, but I vote no as well. The forum can already be overwhelming now to someone new to the progressive/campaigner/hardcore community. Opening up to other time periods IMHO would greatly multiple the overwhelming factor.

            I would be open to such a change, but with some caveats.

            1)Any other time frame added should have its own group of folders (COI, event folders, ect.).
            2) Moderation of other time frames should be performed by moderators whose duties are specifically to oversee the folders of that time frame.
            3) There should be an established "threshold" that would need to be met to add a new time frame to the AC, be it number of interested participants coming on the board who indicate they are involved with the time period in question, a fixed number of staff members ready to start doing the legwork for creating constructive conversations for the time period in question, or some other criteria. It should be agreed upon ahead of time, lest we suddenly have 5 sub forums with a total of 5 users between them all.

              I vote yes because I don't think it'll detrimental to the nature of the AC as the place for authentic Civil War campaigning, but instead add to it. And maybe attracting those are who are authentic in other time periods can boost Civil War numbers as well.

                I vote NO. Mr. King's words hold true. The A/C is a stable site with a specific purpose. This isn't meant to sound harsh. Is the A/C restrictive -- No. Anything other would be overwhelming.

                  I vote to keep it as is . There are other sites for the different time periods. Just my opinion.

                      Stay to the period. Other wars have there own boards no sense in competing. Stay with what you do well and what your known for.

                        Hallo!

                        As an AC member, I vote no.

                        While it is a great idea to be all inclusive and Big Tent to bring together shrinking tents from all around the Reenacting Community....

                        If reenacting and living history were about History, it would be great. Since reenacting is often times about reenacting reenacting, many other Periods or Eras are even more "historically challenged."
                        While every Period has lads who are "doing it right" in a progressive or hardcore/authentic way, many Periods have lower percentages of those who are History-Heavy and greater numbers of those who like to play History-Light as part of their traditions and culture.

                        As a result, I see it as an epic descent into Farbery. Or an admin nightmare on an impossible scale to maintain "authentic" standards and guard against Farbery.

                        Sigh.

                        Others' mileage will vary.

                          I vote no, with the condition that "Civil War era" should be redefined to include three or four years before and after the war. I've been to several good events attended by the same people who attend c/p/h CW events, and sometimes even focussed on the same issues as the war--slavery, north-south differences--which are not allowed to be announced here, strictly speaking, because they've been set just before the war began..

                              I agree with Mr. Trent and Mrs. Lawson. The Civil War didn't start in 1861 for civilians... 1861 was a culmination of smaller events that built to a larger explosion. The process of war did not end in 1865 for civilians... the healing and rebuilding is still in process 150 years later in many ways.
                              If we exclude the events leading up to and the events detailing the aftermath and rebuilding... we are taking the events of 1861 to 1865 out of context and that does not serve the history we try to share.

                              I'm not suggesting we have unlimited years included... but a few years before and after that relate to the war years should be accepted.
