    Re: Federal, Confederate or Civilian?

Most of the mine is going to be pre 1861 civilian militia along the Kansas- Missouri border.
Then it would be Early war Confederate.

      Re: Federal, Confederate or Civilian?

I currently only do Confederate impressions. I got my start in the hobby in SC back in 2006. At the time, I didn't know of any Federal units (or groups that did both) in the area at the time. Since I already had Confederate uniform items when I left the hobby, it was only natural for me to get back into it with a Confederate unit in 2012. That being said, when all of the 150th hoopla is over, I'll be putting my Federal kit together and hope in the future to attend at least 2 events per year as such.

        Re: Federal, Confederate or Civilian?

I grew up doing Confederate infantry and then added a Federal infantry impression. The second Westville event was the first time I ever did a civilian impression and that event is easily in my top 5 events ever. I have been fortunate that a lot of groups have invited me to play so since the summer of 2011 I have attended events as CS infantry, CS cavalry, CS artillery, US infantry, and US cavalry. Cavalry has been the most fun lately but I go to events and pick an impression based upon who I know that will be there and what special thing the event offers to help it or a certain impression stand out.

I and our group requires all to do both. We have everyone start out as CSA, then USA. For some reason down we have found it the best tool to weed out a certain group of folks. That only seem to live in our area. :)

              Re: Federal, Confederate or Civilian?

I really am just getting back in to the hobby, but I was Federal only when I started in Georgia back about 20 years ago. There were just too few Federals on the field. This time I have joined a Confederate unit, but still have most of my Federal kit if needed.

This post just leaps off the page at me...After 15 years doing this I can say without reservation that doing a quality civilian impression is far more difficult than a military one. Often times my unit will just go into a first person mode in which all we do is get caught up strictly in the roles and duties of soldiers. This is very easy. Boil coffee, cook rations, clean rifle, sleep, read letters, complain about weather... Civilians actually must play a certain and prescribed role. Once at TAG, our company was on patrol and ran across a small detail of civilians portraying roaming undertakers, ie. Hank Trent and friends. Watching our captain (Cal Kinzer) question them and give them the business was probably my biggest thrill in the hobby. I felt like a spectator with a rifle. I remember looking at a coffin they were dragging around and wondering just what was in there lol... Anyway, if you think portraying a civilian is 'milling around,' you're running with the wrong ones.

By the way I am strictly Federal Infantry, but have been known to do Dismounted Mounted Infantry on occasion.

I do both....started out doing primarily Federal with the 27th CT in 1999 then expanded my impression to CS (mainly NC but varies by event). Now that I live in NC, moved from CT in 2007, I do the CS but try to do federal when I'm able.

I do Federal, being stationed in the South, there's always a need for more blue. I do have Confederate kit for either AoT or ANV for when I happen to be back home.
