  • Vote For the January Cover of the Authentic Campaigner

    Greetings:

The final three have been selected by the AC Staff and now it is time to vote for the January 2017 Cover of the Authentic Campaigner.

We are looking for images that best-exemplify the look of the authentic living historian. Images taken with period technology only are required (wet plate, pencil drawing, field sketches, etc.).

In general, we want a winning image that looks like it could pass for an original. You are encouraged to make comments about why you voted for a particular image, but let's keep this constructive and civil.

HERE ARE THE FINAL THREE. Click on the Image # to see the image:

    Image #1
    - From Jeff Gibson. By Wendell Decker
Image #2 - From Sam Gaylon. By Bruce R. Schultz
Image #3 - From Sean Cowger. By Robert Szabo.

This poll will close in ten days, on Wednesday, December 28th. The new cover image will be posted before January 1, 2017 and will stay up for one month. We will do it again for February!

My vote goes to the three Confederate soldiers in Image #2. In my humble opinion this image stands out due to the physical characteristics of all three men: their hairstyles, physical stature, and facial expressions are true to the period. Their frock coats and headgear also go a long way towards making the image "believable".
The image itself has that aged look to it. We are used to studying 150 year old photographs and our eyes expect to see that "old and muted look" which this artist has achieved in this phtograph. As a constructive comment (and not a critique) I wonder if this image might might look even more period minus the muskets, following the old axiom "Less is more".

I have to agree with this vote, you could sell that image on EBAY as original.
