        Dutchy,
The Federal Veteran Reserve Corps. What an outfit, the fellows liked the army but not being shot, so they re-upped in the VRC to serve in back areas, hospitals and prison camps. Their sky-blue uniforms set them apart and caused ridicule yet most did their duty well and served long after the war concluded. A VRC unit met Early when he attacked Washington D.C, in 1864 and a unit (two regiments) guarded Camp Douglas in Chicago and helped foil an escape attempt by Confederate prisoners during the 1864 Presidential election. For years people who have seen the photograph of the Presidential Reviewing Stand at the Grand Review in 1865, Washington, D.C., were puzzled why Confederate troops seemed stationed at the foot of the stand. They were VRC!

My understanding is that the VRC was composed of men who had already been wounded or disabled in service, but were still willing to serve their country--hence their original title, Invalid Corps. You make it sound as though the corps was filled with cowards who were afraid of frontline service. I'm researching a possible ancestor who served in two different combat units (infantry and cavalry) before he transferred to the VRC. His pension file includes statements by friends and commanders that show he was a brave and dedicated soldier.

I hasten to add that I'm not attacking you, Mr. Sullivan. Just don't want anyone to be mislead about the VRC.

This one would definitly have to be the Confederate Missouri Brigade, one of the most overlooked fighting forces of the entire war.
