  • Vote for the June Cover of the AC

    Members of the AC:

We had a bit of a late start, so this month, we are putting all ten images out for the final vote. If you submitted one of the photos, let us know who the photographer was and some context for the voters. The goal is to pick the images that look to be as close to an original as possible. If you feel one is more deserving than the others, let us know why as opposed to why you think an image doesn't belong. Here are the images:

Image #1 - Submitted By Paul Boccadoro

Image #2 - Submitted By Michael Badhand

Image #3 - Submitted By Brandon Delvo

Image #4 - Submitted By Dale Beasley

Image #5 - Submitted By Cody Mobley

Image #6 - Submitted By Joseph Musgrove

Image #7 - Submitted By Ike Gatlin

Image #8 - Submitted By Mark Hubbs

Image #9 - Submitted By Kris Freymuth

Image #10 - Submitted By Matt Woodburn

Image #1 was inspired by the attached original photo of an unknown sailor. It was taken by Dave Wilson of Victorian Photography Studio in Gettysburg, PA, and I made everything I'm wearing, all copied from original examples that I examined, right down to the cap tally! Dave procured the heavy rope, and we copied the photo as best as possible, including the stripe along the wall.

Re: Vote for the June Cover of the AC

Image #7, submitted by Ike Gatlin, is of "The General", Al Gatlin. The image was taken by Claude Levet probably in 1992.

Al Gatlin is one of the giants upon whose shoulders we all stand. He came before us and laid the groundwork for EBUFU events, using non-profit event hosts and making donations to historic sites across the country in reaction to for-profit entities hosting events and pocketing the cash. He brought organization to the Western Theater reenactors, herding cats into and creating the North/South Alliance. The NSA event model is still used today at all levels and across the country. If you enjoy the idea of enforced impression guidelines, events raising money for historic preservation, balanced force ratios, safety enforcement, and even the inclusion of a civilian village at big events, you can thank Al Gatlin. His influence on this hobby has been immense.

There are a lot of good images here. Not to take anything away from any of them, but Al Gatlin was the original "authentic campaigner". Let's vote him to the cover of the AC for June!

        Thanks!

Re: Vote for the June Cover of the AC

Congratulations to Ike Gatlin for his winning submittal of Al Gatlin this month. As usual, we had some excellent choices. The depth of realistic images that our hobby has collected over the years always surprises me a little. Truly, our period photographers are a valuable resource.

So ends this chapter in the AC Cover Contest. Thanks so much to everyone who submitted and participated this month. This was one of our better voting turnouts in a long time.

          This poll is officially closed.
