We encourage more specific discussion about the images. In other words, if you like the image, please don't just chime in with a "me too". Tell us why you think one image is superior to another.

Image No. 3, was inspired by an original image of Co. D, 93d New York Infantry:

In spite of the fact that they're yankees, I like #3. To be more specific, the whole effect of the picture, especially the 1000 yard stare present in at least 4 of the gentlemen.

Re: Vote For the March Cover

Thank you Mr. Hicks for following the rules of the contest. These are the other two descriptions that I pulled from the original submittal thread:

Image #1 - Description (From original submittal thread)

              Confederate Prisoner Image
Taken at Goose Creek Bridge May 2006

The poses in this image were inspired by a variety of Confederate prisoner images and shows variations of demeanors and characters as with the originals.

Image #2 - Description (From original submittal thread)

This photo was taken at Fort James Jackson, Savannah River Defense Headquarters, Savannah, Georgia in 2004 during a living history weekend for the 4th of July.

This photo depicts myself in the 1864 uniform of the 11th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Battalion, Co. "A" "Savannah Volunteer Guards." This was the first time since the War Between The States this particular unit and uniform had been depicted and worn, thats 140 years since they last wore this uniform!

This uniform was completely researched through the Georgia Historical Society to the Savannah Volunteer Guards as of late 1864.

It is number 3 for me. I feel it really captures the look and feel of an original.

Re: Vote For the March Cover

I enjoyed the work of the guys in #3, but I frankly cant agree that #3 has an adequate "thousand yard stare" - to the contrary, I see quite a bit of emotion or expression/affect on several faces in #3. The "thousand yard stare" is supposed to be a hollow, empty expression, associated with the psychological after shock of exposure to battle - call it trauma etc. & c., but my vote is for #1 - other than a couple guys, most of the fellows in #1 have a pretty hardened, flat projection in their eyes and actually look like soldiers. On the other hand, I am not sure that I have ever seen images of Civil War soldiers lying on their stomach like they were watching TV mind you, but overall, the gestalt in #1 is convincing enough for me.

                      Cheers

Sir, the fellow that chose to position himself that way had actually brought to our attention that he had studied a similar photogragh (original) where a soldier was posed in that manner reading a newspaper, which is what he tried to project in the image.

                        Just to clarify for you.

All three are fantastic, but number two is spooky, it looks so much like an original! The research into these recreations is to be comended.

                            I gotta agree here!

Image 1: Nice looking image, but...
Based on descriptions, Image 1 contains individual poses based on original photos. However, I (based on my personal experience)do not recall seeing no photo with this few prisoners. Am I nutz?

                            Image 2 looks great, but...
I would love to know more about the specific details that we see created in that pic/impression that are specific to the unit/time/place being portrayed.

Image 3*: Kudos to Messr Hicks for the direct citation of the original he is attempting to reproduce

                            * In the interest of full disclosure: I am "dude with arms crossed" in Image 3. However, I am posting this in the interest of promoting good discussion of what makes for a good image, rather than gettin' my out-o-de-focal-plain mug on the front page.
