Vote For the September Cover

Greetings Everyone:

It is time to vote for the September Cover of the Authentic Campaigner. This month, we have four finalists, since there was a three-way tie for third in the preliminary voting. Please vote for the image that you feel is the most authentic. If your image is one of the final four, we are requiring that you provide some background information about the inspiration or impression for the image in this thread.

We encourage conversation about the impressions portrayed as well as any documentation that might be available that would add to the discussion. The intent of the selection process is to determine why you think one image is superior to another.

I know it's not getting the votes, but my personal favorite is #4. From a photographer's point of view, that one really nails it for me. But that's not why I'm here. I notice #4 is holding what looks to be a dag case at the back of the chair. A loved one? I assume it has to be fairly significant to the owner.
I hope I get to find out.

The man in the image is a friend of mine Joe Marti. What you see in his hand is a tintype in the dag case of his CW ansector who struck the exact same pose as Joe has done. This is Joe's homage to that ancestor.

#3 and #4 are excellent. I have a copy of original photo of two Czech brothers in the Louisiana Crescent regiment that could be #3. There are any number of examples of photos just like #4 as well.

Well, I'm #4 as it turns out. I've been gone all weekend so I didn't see the discussion.

I am holding in my hand a likeness of my Great-Great-Grandfather, Pvt. Dietrich Bingle, 10th NYHA.

It means a great deal to me for a few reasons. First and foremost, my discovery of this ancestor led me directly to becoming interested in both the SUVCW and reenacting. I always knew I had an ancestor 'somewhere' in the Civil War, but until I did the research nobody in my family knew how direct the connection was.

Secondly, the image I am imitating was entirely unknown to my family. I was researching the 10th NYHA when I found a partial roster. On it was my GGG's name with a link attached. This photo of him is what I found. I was totally overcome by the discovery, and was further awed by the fact that I found this image, unknown to my family for generations, 140 years to the day (June 23rd, 1865) he was mustered out of the Army in Petersburg.

Months later, when I told a longtime assistant of William Dunniway about this find and my intention to have a tintype made in the same exact image, it was his suggestion that I hold the image in the photo in a way that someone may not notice it, and also to be positioned in a way that made a mirror image.

I wasn't sure why the mirror image was a good idea at first, but I soon understood its value. As I type this, both images are on my wall. On the left is me looking right, on the right is my GGG looking left, seemingly at one another.

So whether or not someone votes for the image, I think it's a really interesting turn of events and one that I would find interesting if it was someone else.

The intent and the respect behind image #4 gets my vote.
I only wish I had a war time image of one of my ancestors.

Joe with image 4 got my vote. I enjoy seeing pictures of folks honoring their ancestors. I actually have on of my GGG Grandfather Wm. Davis Couch who fought with Phillips Legion Cavalry.

Great photo of your ancestor. I especially like the fact that he has one of the militia/presentation type swords. A little under represented today in the hobby...Sometimes....

I'd love to, just gotta get the suit and grow a little more hair. My father actually has a sword similar to it that he rec'd from my Grandfather (not the same sword). We don't have any of his personal effects as they have been split up and lost over the years. He actually passed away at Hellmira in November of '64 from pneumonia.
