Re: Poll - Reenact or Enact?

Was the TV show "The Unfinished Civil War" inaccurate, or simply ahead of its time?

...or maybe it was dead-on the whole time, moreso than we'd all like to admit. Some of us, anyway. Too bad the poll didn't show the usernames of the voters.

How can you define a "trend" or even an "interesting trend" after 19 responses to a poll? There are quite a few more members on this forum, and I'd venture to guess that there are many people who don't qualify for any of the stated poll opinions, but are more like Mr. Butler or Mr. Runyon.

There is already an interesting trend in the poll, don't you think?

I'm sorry Dan but thats a step too far there.

This site does not support modern political agendas nor does it allow anyone to make the AC their platform for espousing political agendas. That is where this thread is going and it's not going to go any further.

I, for one, simply refuse to vote.

            Ross -

Point's been made. That choice has been added. There was a trend at 19 responses and I was asking if it was interesting. It's all good.

OK by me, I understand the concern.

Re: Poll - Reenact or Enact?

                Dan-

I feel that Living Historians are the ones who truly understand (above all others in this world that don't know a thing about history)that our period that we study isn't coming back again, but we need to critically learn and study the overall lessons of the past unless we want to repeat them. (Which usually happens anyway regardless...)

We are the ones that try to grapple with the questions and lessons that history has taught us are either true or untrue. No modern politics to it, really. I suppose they can be re-fought by some if you wanna go there, but that will just get you into a can-of-worms and no one can agree on politics completely.

...at least, that's what my grandmomma says. :o

I'd say a LH of any time period understands where humanity has been, therefore knows better than your average person what our present is all about truly as a whole. Knowing this, I'd say we realize that the problems of the 1860s aren't exactly coming back, but that we certainly can learn from their lessons for our future generations' sake.

After all, think: What did a "caveman" do when he came back from a hunting party successful with his kill? He most likely "reenacted" it in the form of story, song or dance to communicate why he was so successful in order to preserve knowledge and lessons.

This is why what we do is constructive, important, and so enjoyable in the progressive community: We come together to keep history alive and fresh so ourselves and others around us won't forget all of its lessons at every level.

"History is the legacy of what has worked and what hasn't." -Kyle Sinisi

I hope this thread doesn't go toward modern politics... that is not really appropriate here on this website.

Re: Poll - Reenact or Enact?

And here I thought it was just a hobby for us modern day people to try to gain a better understanding of SOME of the experiences of the actual soldiers and civilians of the period, to the best of our ability as a result of our interest in the Civil War, and impart that knowledge to others who may seek it...not an opportunity to grandstand, play out poor "B"actor roles, or justify warped, outdated, and prejudicial attitudes...No offense nor implications to anyone here - I am simply musing on observations I have made in the course of my reenacting experience. Best regards.

Re: Poll - Reenact or Enact?

I'm with John Wickett (I'm not voting). I feel uncomfortably that this is some kind of litmus test for somebody, somewhere, to prove something, somehow, and I'm not exactly sure why it's necessary. If there needs to be a simple declaration that there are some in the South who have much more passionate engagement with reenacting because it connects them to something that looms large in their emotional life, well, I think we all kinda knew that, and no, it's not that anyone is espousing a return to slavery, but still: Do you really want to go there? And if so, why? What does putting a number on it really amount to?

This poll serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever.

I haven't voted, either, but I suppose I'd be in the "other" category.

As far as my personal political sympathies, allegiance, and commitment, they are to neither the Union nor Confederate causes (though I had numerous ancestors fight in defense of the latter)...But instead are wholly, entirely, and unreservedly dedicated to the United States of America, circa 2007.
