  • Wanna Be on the December Cover of the AC?

    Greetings:

Happy Holidays Everyone! It is time to search for the December Cover of the Authentic Campaigner.

We are looking for images that best-exemplify the look of the authentic living historian. Images taken with period technology only, please. (wet plate, etc.) are required. We will also accept pencil, paint or similiar sketches done in the field (again, the image must have been done with period technology only).

    Submission Guidelines:

    1) If you have submitted an image within the last six months, do not re-submit the image. We will not accept images that have been submitted within the last six months.

    2) We will accept the first ten image submissions only. The thread will be closed after the tenth image is submitted, and any images submitted after the tenth will be deleted from the thread.

    3) Once we have ten images, the staff will select the final three. The final three will then be put up for a general vote to the membership of the forum. The winning image will be placed on the front "cover" of the web site for one month.

    4) Make sure and attach the photo to your post. If necessary, we will crop the photo for the best fit.

    5) The Moderators/Administrators reserve the right to remove any submittals that they feel don't meet the standards of the Authentic Campaigner.

    "Betting on a marbles game"

Image taken by Mike Covington at Plantation Liendo this past weekend.

Left to right standing: Edwin Erwin, Adam Johnson, Ryan Smith, Phil Graf
Playing marbles: Cody Mobley (shooting) and Cody Farrell

This image was staged due to the fact that in the Western battlefields (Louisiana) and camp sites in Texas there have been a large number of marbles dug. This would show that the game was quite popular amongst the men in the far west and like with other games, betting would undoubtedly ensue.

    [HOUSTON] TRI-WEEKLY TELEGRAPH, October 28, 1863,

    Wanted.

All ladies in Houston and surrounding counties who have cloth on hand, which they can spare, are requested to donate it to the ladies of Crockett for the purpose of making petticoats for the Minute Men of this county, who have "backed out" of the service. We think the petticoat more suitable for them in these times.

Members of the Hardtack Society and Liberty Rifles at Old Bedford Village, Bedford, PA. Photo taken by Terry Whittington, July 2006

About once or twice a year, the members of these groups go to Old Bedford Village and volunteer their time to the improvement of the houses there. That particular summer, members ripped up an existing porch and its supports, then redid the entire structural system and relaid new planks. All work was done with period tools and hardware, and completed in about a day and a half. Roger, the owner and shown second from left, always appreciates the time and effort we put into the houses.

Mods: Please remove this post if you see fit...I went back and saw that all photos had to be period technology only.

Eric, yup. Great photo, but yes, those are the rules. :D ET

Here's a photo I took at the Shadows-on-the-Teche encampment on Nov. 10. This fellow is standing watch under an oak tree along Bayou Teche. It's a quarter-plate tintype.

Removed photo since it is not of period technology, so we have seven submitted and three to go.

Wow, that was fast this month. We now have our ten images. Had to eliminate the 11th. Sorry about that. Those are the rules. Thanks to everyone who submitted. I notice we have some new choices this month, including a sketch . Excellent.

We will now take these images and narrow down to the the final three. Thanks everyone. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
